Journal ArticleDOI

Extraction of extracellular polymers from activated sludge using a cation exchange resin

TL;DR: In this article, the extraction of water soluble extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) from activated sludge was investigated, which consisted mainly of protein but also humic compounds, carbohydrates, uronic acids and DNA.
Journal ArticleDOI

Conceptual Model for Production and Composition of Exopolymers in Biofilms

TL;DR: A conceptual biofilm model taking into account microbial physiology with regard to production of extracellular polymers and their transformation within the biofilm is suggested and can be helpful in structuring the design and evaluation of biofilm experiments focusing on biofilm structure and properties.
Journal ArticleDOI

Accumulation of DNA in the exopolymeric matrix of activated sludge and bacterial cultures

TL;DR: More deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) was measured than could be accounted for by cell counts in activated sludge flocs, a mixed culture of sludge bacteria, and a pure culture of Pseudomonas putida, which means that estimations of cell number by measurement and correlation with DNA content will result in an overestimation of the cell number or biomass by up to a factor 10.
Journal ArticleDOI

Influence of oxygen limitation on the cell surface properties of bacteria from activated sludge

TL;DR: There are many difficulties in measuring cell surface hydrophobicity since other cell surface properties, such as surface charge, influence the measurement methods, and the MATH test was employed to establish how assay conditions influenced the results.
