The phytochemistry of the genus Piper is rich in terms of numbers of compounds discovered, but given the diversity of this genus and the intraspecific diversity of secondary metabolites in those species that have been examined, Piper chemistry has not been adequately investigated. The natural products chemistry that has been elucidated is well documented and has been the subject of extensive review (Sengupta and Ray 1987, Parmar et al. 1997). Since those reviews were published, 28 new species have been investigated (Benevides et al. 1999, Chen et al. 2002, Ciccio 1997, de Abreu et al. 2002, Dodson et al. 2000, dos Santos et al. 2001, Facundo and Morais 2003, Jacobs et al. 1999, Joshi et al. 2001, Martins et al. 1998, Masuoka et al. 2002, McFerren and Rodriquez 1998, Moreira et al. 1998, Mundina et al. 1998, Srivastava et al. 2000a, Stohr et al. 2001, Terreaux et al. 1998, Torquilho et al. 2000, Vila et al. 2001, 2003, Wu et al. 1997), and 69 compounds new to Piper have been discovered (Adesina et al. 2002, Alecio et al. 1998, Baldoqui et al. 1999, Banerji et al. 1993, 2002b, Boll et al. 1994, Chen et al. 2002, Ciccio 1997, Da Cunha and Chaves 2001, Das and Kashinatham 1998, daSilva et al. 2002, de Araujo-Junior et al. 1997, Dodson et al. 2000, Gupta et al. 1999, Jacobs et al. 1999, Joshi et al. 2001, Martins et al. 1998, Masuoka et al. 2002, Menon et al. 2000, 2002, Moreira et al. 1998, 2000, Mundina et al. 1998, Navickiene et al. 2000, Pande et al. 1997, Parmar et al. 1998, Santos and Chaves 1999a,b, Santos et al. 1998, Seeram et al. 1996, Siddiqui et al. 2002, Srivastava et al. 2000a,b, Stohr et al. 1999, Terreaux et al. 1998, Wu et al. 2002a,b, Zeng et al. 1997).

Isolation, Synthesis, and Evolutionary Ecology of Piper Amides

This is an extensive review on epiphytic plants that have been used traditionally as medicines. It provides information on 185 epiphytes and their traditional medicinal uses, regions where Indigenous people use the plants, parts of the plants used as medicines and their preparation, and their reported phytochemical properties and pharmacological properties aligned with their traditional uses. These epiphytic medicinal plants are able to produce a range of secondary metabolites, including alkaloids, and a total of 842 phytochemicals have been identified to date. As many as 71 epiphytic medicinal plants were studied for their biological activities, showing promising pharmacological activities, including as anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anticancer agents. There are several species that were not investigated for their activities and are worthy of exploration. These epipythes have the potential to furnish drug lead compounds, especially for treating cancers, and thus warrant indepth investigations.

Vascular Epiphytic Medicinal Plants as Sources of Therapeutic Agents: Their Ethnopharmacological Uses, Chemical Composition, and Biological Activities.

Studies on the impact of IPM and non-IPM practices were undertaken during rabi season 2018-19 at College of Horticulture, Venkataramannagudem, West Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh with an objective of estimating the pesticide residue levels in fruits harvested from okra plots. IPM plot of okra includes common IPM practices and need based sequential application of botanicals and bioagents. Whereas, sequential spraying of synthetic pesticides was undertaken in non-IPM plot of okra. Levels of pesticide residues in the okra fruits obtained from IPM and non-IPM plots was estimated at Pesticide Residue and Food Quality Analysis Laboratory (PRFQAL), University of Agricultural Sciences, Raichur, Karnataka. The residues of imidachloprid (6.7 ppm), thiomethoxam (3.8 ppm), flubendiamide (7.9 ppm), chlorantraniliprole (6.5 ppm) were identified in the harvested okra fruits from non-IPM plot which are far above the maximum residue limits (MRL), however no pesticides were detected in the okra fruits from IPM plot.

Determination of pesticide residue levels in okra (Abelmoschus esculentus (L.) monech) plots by LC-MS/MS

Piper retrofractum Vahl. which belongs to the family Piperaceae, is a popular spice possessing high medicinal properties. The present article aims to provide a review of the studies done on phytochemistry and biological activities of P. retrofractum. This review is based on a literature study of scientific journals from electronic sources, such as Science Direct, PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science. The main chemical constituents that have been isolated and identified from P. retrofractum are amides, alkaloids, phenylpropanoids, alkyl glycosides, and lignans. This plant possesses antioxidant, hepatoprotective, cytotoxic, larvicidal, antiproliferation, antitubercular, antileishmanial, antiphotoaging, and antiobesity properties. P. retrofractum has the potential for the treatment of several diseases and disorders, but there are only a few studies done to investigate the plant phytochemicals, thus further studies should be focused on isolation and identification of active compounds with pharmacological activities. Besides, the majority of pharmacological studies have been performed using aerial parts of the plant, however, further studies are needed to investigate bioactivity of other parts of the plant.

Phytopharmacological Investigations of Piper retrofractum Vahl. – A Review

3-methyl-5-decanoylpyridine and amides from piper retrofractum

Dissipation behavior of neonicotinoide insecticide, imidacloprid (Imidacel 17.8 SL), in okra fruits was studied following application at dose 20g a.i. ha-1. Observations showed an initial deposition of 1.027 mgkg-1 imidacloprid residues in okra fruit samples. Imidacloprid residue levels on 1, 3, 5 days after spray was observed 0.688 mgkg-1, 0.367 mgkg-1, 0.197 mgkg-1, respectively. The residues of imidacloprid went below detection limit within 7 days of application. The estimated half life (t1/2) of imidacloprid in okra fruits was observed to be 2.094 days. The residue level went below maximum residue limit (0.7mg kg-1 for okra) within 3 days at the recommended dose.
