The late Pleistocene and Holocene stratigraphy and paleolimnology of Lakes Kivu and Tanganyika

Most Ethiopian lakes are parts of closed drainage systems and collectively form an extensive salinity series, here treated comparatively for geographical, chemical and algal characteristics. Chemical data are presented for 28 lakes and numerous inflows, including original analyses for 15 lakes, in which total ionic concentration and electrical conductivity vary over 4 orders of magnitude. The principal determinant of a lake's position in the series is the open or closed nature of its individual drainage. At present there are three major closed systems (Awash R. — Afar drainage, northern rift lakes, southern rift lakes), numerous crater lakes with seepage -in and -out, and two cryptodepressions with marine inputs. Salinity is primarily determined by evaporative concentration, enhanced in lakes associated with past marine influence or recent volcanic activity by readily soluble materials in the catchment, and by some thermal-reflux pathways. However, anomalously dilute closed lakes exist, indicative of other processes of solute loss (e.g. past basin overflow, ‘reverse weathering’, seepage-out).

Chemical and algal relationships in a salinity series of Ethiopian inland waters

A 2-week multidisciplinary study of the physical, chemical, and biological mechanisms controlling the initiation of the late summer blooms of the diazotrophic cyanobacteria, Aphanizomenon jlos-aqua2 Ralfs and Nodularia spumigena Mertens, in the Baltic Sea was carried out in a frontal region at the entrance to the Gulf of Finland in July 1993. The front is formed by inflowing sa‘itier waters of the northern Baltic proper and outflowing fresher waters from the gulf, and its position and shape are largely controlled by wind conditions. In general, the waters of the northern Baltic proper are less stratified than the outflowing lesssaline waters. At the time of the study, the two major water masses differed in terms of phytoplankton community structure, both at species level and at the level of functional groups. Wind-induced vertical mixing was instrumental in bringing nutrient pulses to the upper mixed layer in the less-stratified, high-saline water mass. Nutrient pulses were followed by enhancement of primary productivity and assimilation number (primary productivity/Chl a) in cyanobacterial (> 20 pm) and flagellate (< 20 vrn) size fractions. It is proposed that mesoscale blooms of A. flos-aquae benefit from the nutrient-pulsing events. Calm weather and solar heating, as reflected by rising temperatures in the upper mixed layer and overriding of water masses in the frontal region, resulted in substantial shallowing of the upper mixed layer, which initiated the bloom of N. spumifena.

Initiation of cyanobacterial blooms in a frontal region at the entrance to the Gulf of Finland, Baltic Sea

The distribution of diatoms with respect to salinity and ionic gradients was studied in lakes of the northern Great Plains of North America. The lakes range from freshwater to hypersaline (0.65–270 g∙L−1) and include a variety of brine types, although the majority are dominated by sulfate salts. Canonical correspondence analysis of diatoms in the surface sediments of 66 lakes and associated water chemistry data indicates that diatom distributions are highly correlated with salinity. The ordination also suggests that brine type forms a significant environmental gradient and separates taxa characteristic of bicarbonate/carbonate lakes from those of sulfate-dominated systems. The salinityoptima and tolerances of diatom species are calculated by weighted averaging regression, and these data provide a tool for the reconstruction of past salinity and the inferance of climatic change in arid and semiarid regions.

Diatom assemblages and ionic characterization of lakes of the northern great-plains, north-america - a tool for reconstructing past salinity and climate fluctuations

The Great Plains landscape is less topographically complex than most other regions within North America, but diverse aquatic ecosystems, such as playas, pothole lakes, ox-bow lakes, springs, groundwater aquifers, intermittent and ephemeral streams, as well as large rivers and wetlands, are highly dynamic and responsive to extreme climatic fluctuations. We review the evidence for climatic change that demonstrates the historical importance of extremes in north-south differences in summer temperatures and east-west differences in aridity across four large subregions. These physical driving forces alter density stratification, deoxygenation, decomposition and salinity. Biotic community composition and associated ecosystem processes of productivity and nutrient cycling respond rapidly to these climatically driven dynamics. Ecosystem processes also respond to cultural effects such as dams and diversions of water for irrigation, waste dilution and urban demands for drinking water and industrial uses. Distinguishing climatic from cultural effects in future models of aquatic ecosystem functioning will require more refinement in both climatic and economic forecasting. There is a need, for example, to predict how long-term climatic forecasts (based on both ENSO and global warming simulations) relate to the permanence and productivity of shallow water ecosystems. Aquatic ecologists, hydrologists, climatologists and geographers have much to discuss regarding the synthesis of available data and the design of future interdisciplinary research.

Potential effects of climate change on aquatic ecosystems of the Great Plains of North America

Collections of algae, mainly planktonic, were made from 41 saline lakes in southern Saskatchewan ranging in salinity from 3.2 to 428 g l-1. Algae in 7 phyla, 8 classes, 42 families, 91 genera and 212 species and varieties were identified. Fourteen species were restricted to hypersaline (50 g l-1) waters and eleven of these were diatoms. In general, species diversity was inversely related to lake salinity. Algae that were important community constituents over a broad spectrum of salinities were the green algae Ctenocladus circinnatus, Dunaliella salina and Rhizoclonium hieroglyphicum, the blue-green Lyngbya Birgei, Microcystis aeruginosa, Oscillatoria tenuis, O. Utermoehli and Nodularia spumigena and the diatoms Melosira granulata, Stephanodiscus niagarae and Chaetoceros Elmorei. In general green algae were dominant when lake salinity exceeded 100 g l-1 although diatoms played important roles in most of these highly saline lakes except for Patience Lake.

The distribution and abundance of algae in saline lakes of Saskatchewan, Canada

The geology and physiography, climate, soils and vegetation of the saline lakes region of southern Saskatchewan are briefly reviewed. The location and morphometry of 60 saline lakes was determined. Some of them are large (307 km2) but mean depths do not exceed 10 m and many are very shallow. Light penetration varied considerably from very turbid shallow lakes to Redberry Lake where the 1% light level was below 16.5 m. Light extinction coefficients for the entire water column of deeper lakes (7) varied from 0.256 to 2.558.



Shallow lakes failed to stratify thermally but a dozen deeper lakes stratified for at least several months. Higher salinity tends to prolong stratification. Thermal stratification augmented chemical stratification in two meromictic lakes. Maximum temperature up to 30 °C in very saline shallow waters was recorded while temperatures as low as-3 °C occurred under the ice. Freezing was delayed and thawing accelerated in more saline lakes. Annual heat budgets varied from 3350 to 13,900 g cal cm-2 in seven lakes.



Oxygen concentration was reduced below thermoclines and was virtually absent below the ice in very shallow lakes and, at times, in a very productive lake.

The Saline Lakes of Saskatchewan II. Locale, Hydrography and other Physical Aspects

Primary production by phytoplankton, efficiency of photosynthesis, and chlorophyll-a concentrations were determined for seven saline lakes that varied widely in ionic concentration and composition. The investigations were done during the summer months of 1972 and 1973. Productivity ranged from 0.001 to 11.135 g C m−3 day−1 and 0.053 to 7.968 g C m−2 day−1. Highest productivities were measured in two lakes that supported blooms of Aphanizomenon flos-aquae and Nodularia spumigena, respectively. Species of Cyanophyceae, Bacillariophyceae and Chlorophyceae dominated the phytoplankton of the study lakes. Active chlorophyll-a ranged from 0.01 to 116 mg m−3. Integral photosynthetic efficiency estimates were <1% except during phytoplankton blooms when they were considerably higher. The overall range of 0.03 to 3.8% is concordant with estimates for other lacustrine ecosystems. The extinction of light caused by photo-synthetic processes, or in situ efficiency, was <1% in the trophogenic zone for most lakes but, it was considerably higher during blooms. In situ efficiencies invariably increased with depth in ail lakes.
