An atmospheric gas burner assembly producing relatively low oxides of nitrogen (NO x ) emissions comprising a gas-air feed tube communicating with a burner chamber portion provided with an apertured inner burner distribution plate member having a multiplicity of relatively large size outlet apertures for distributing the gas-air mixture outwardly from the burner chamber portion, an intermediate burner port plate member overlying the apertured distribution plate member in spaced relation thereto and provided with a multiplicity of relatively small size burner port outlets for issuing outwardly therefrom small gas-air streams which combust to form a low temperature, low flame front profile over the outer surface of the burner port plate member, and an outer screen mantle member of woven stainless steel wire cloth of fine mesh overlying the burner port plate member is closely spaced relation thereto and positioned within the tip ends of the flame front issuing from the burner port plate member to become heated to an infrared radiant heat emitting condition. A turbulator member is positioned within the venturi tube to create turbulence of the fuel-air mixture passing therethrough to minimize resonance thereof during burner operation.

Water heater construction and method of heating water

A hybrid heating apparatus heats potable water with waste heat from heat recovery units and insolation from solar collectors. A single circulation pump circulates fluid between at least one heat exchanger and each of the heat recovery units and preferably the solar collector. A single controller receives sensor readings from the heat recovery units and the solar collector units and receives a demand to heat the potable water. To satisfy the demand, the controller determines the extent to which the demand may be satisfied from heat available from the heat recovery units and the solar collector units and sends command signals both to the circulating pump to circulate the fluid and to appropriate ones of valves at connections to those heat recovery units and solar collector units to allow fluid to circulate to be heated to flow to the heat exchanger for effecting heat exchange to heat the potable water.

Hybrid water heating system

A direct venting system for an indoor domestic type water heater vents the combustion chamber of the water heater directly with the outdoor atmosphere by means of natural convection both to supply incoming combustion air and to expel flue gases A conduit assembly extends from an indoor end associated with the water heater to an outdoor end in communication with the outdoor atmosphere, and provides continuous combustion air inlet and flue gas outlet plenums to isolate the combustion chamber of the water heater from the indoor room air

A freeze protection system allows the working fluid contained in the communicating tubes of the solar collector to drain from both the input and output tubes of the collector when a first predetermined temperature of the working fluid is detected and to fill the collector via both the input and output tubes when a second predetermined temperature is detected The invention includes valve mechanisms, of the spool valve variety, that communicate the working fluid to be heated to the collector and therefrom to a storage tank, a valve actuator and a sensor The actuator moves a valve element from a first position for communicating working fluid to be heated from a source to the input tube of the collector and for communicating heated working fluid from the output tube of the collector to a storage facility to a second position for interrupting fluid communication from the source to the collector and for communicating both the input and output tubes of the collector to a drainpipe--draining the collector of working fluid--when the first predetermined temperature level is detected by the sensor Upon detection of the second predetermined temperature level the sensor causes the actuator to return the valve element to the first position via an intermediate position that closes the drainpipe and temporarily communicates the working fluid to both the input and output tubes of the collector

Freeze protection apparatus for solar collectors

A solar water heating system in which piping arrangements and solenoid operated valves are combined with a water storage heater and solar heater or collectors in a manner to protect the system against over temperature and against freezing without the use of antifreeze or auxiliary heat exchanger systems.

Solar water heating system

A cold water inlet tube located in a horizontal position adjacent the bottom of a commercial water heater. Intermittent discharge openings or nozzles are provided in the bottom of the tube and directed at an angle to discharge jets of incoming cold water to the bottom of the water heater in which the tube is assembled to agitate any sediment tending to be deposited on the bottom head of the heater. Similarly, a single generally centrally located opening or nozzle is provided in the top or upper portion of the tube to discharge a jet of cold water upwardly towards the hot water in the upper portion of the water heater to reduce stacking of the water stored in the water heater.

Cold water inlet tube

An anode adherred to a flue pipe which consists of anodic metal like zinc, aluminum or magnesium flame sprayed in the form of a ribbon, strip or ring onto exposed metal at the upper end of the flue pipe beneath the upper head of a water heater. The anodic metal overlaps the glass coating on the flue at the joint between the glass and anodic metal and has a press fit with the upper head to eliminate any problem of corrosion at the joint area between the flue and upper head.
