Systems and methods, including computer program products, providing high-availability in server systems. In one implementation, a server system is cluster of two or more autonomous server nodes, each running one or more virtual servers. When a node fails, its virtual servers are migrated to one or more other nodes. Connectivity between nodes and clients is based on virtual IP addresses, where each virtual server has one or more virtual IP addresses. Virtual servers can be assigned failover priorities, and, in failover, higher priority virtual servers can be migrated before lower priority ones. Load balancing can be provided by distributing virtual servers from a failed node to multiple different nodes. When a port within a node fails, the node can reassign virtual IP addresses from the failed port to other ports on the node until no good ports remain and only then migrate virtual servers to another node or nodes.

High-availability cluster virtual server system

In a network interconnecting a plurality of content providers and a plurality of clients, each of the content providers is coupled to at least one content distribution network of a plurality of content distribution networks, wherein the client is coupled to at least one of the plurality of content distribution networks and a request for the content is sent from the client to a redirector node that receives requests, wherein a redirector at the redirector node provides an address for a server available to serve the requested content. When the client's content distribution network (CDN) is a primary CDN for the content provider providing the requested content, redirecting the client to a server within the client's content distribution network. When the client's CDN is not a primary CDN for the content provider but the client's CDN has a content peering relationship with a primary CDN for the content provider, redirecting the client to a server within the client's CDN. When the client's CDN is not a primary CDN for the content provider and the client's CDN does not have a content peering relationship with a primary CDN for the content provider, redirecting the client to a server outside the client's CDN.

A system, method, and article of manufacture are provided for delivering service via a locally addressable interface. A plurality of globally addressable interfaces and a plurality of locally addressable interfaces are provided. Access is allowed to a plurality of different sets of services from each of the globally addressable interfaces and the locally addressable interface. Each interface has a unique set of services associated therewith. The globally addressable interfaces are registered in a naming service for facilitating access thereto. Use of the locally addressable interfaces is permitted only via the globally addressable interfaces or another locally addressable interface.

Delivering service to a client via a locally addressable interface

A method and system for inserting and examining Cookies in the data streams of HTTP connections for the purpose of persistently directing HTTP connections to the same destination. The present invention enables a network transmission device, e.g., a router or controller, to reliably and efficiently direct subsequent HTTP connections from the same client to the same server (destination) for accessing the requested resources. There are four modes for employing the Cookie to persistently direct HTTP connections. The associative mode inserts a Cookie into an HTTP response that uniquely identifies the client so that when a client's subsequent HTTP request is compared to a table, the HTTP request will be routed to a previously selected destination associated with the client. The passive mode inserts Cookie information into an HTTP response that uniquely identifies a previously selected destination such as a node server so that when a client's subsequent HTTP request is examined, it will be provided to the previously selected destination. In the rewrite mode, a network transmission device manages the destination information that is rewritten over blank Cookie information generated by the destination producing the HTTP response. The insert mode enables a network transmission device to insert and remove Cookie information in the data packets for HTTP requests and responses prior to processing by the destination. The Cookie information can include a time stamp. Other types of Cookies include priority, path and hops.

Method and system for storing load balancing information with an HTTP cookie

The present application discloses methods and systems for configuring and managing class-based condensation. One aspect thereof includes an automated mechanism to receive a user request for a document, retrieve the document from a content server, and compare the document to a base file of a document class. If a delta-difference between the requested document and the base file is less than a predetermined threshold value, create a condensed document by abbreviating redundancy in the requested document relative to the base file of the associated document class, associate the document with the document class, and transmit the condensed document to the user. The documents within a document class possess similar layouts.

Method and system for class-based management of dynamic content in a networked environment

A network-infrastructure cache ("NI Cache") transparently provides proxy file services to a plurality of client workstations concurrently requesting access to file data stored on a server. The NI Cache includes a network interface that connects to a digital computer network. A file-request service-module of the NI Cache receives and responds to network-file-services-protocol requests from workstations through the network interface. A cache, also included in the NI Cache, stores data that is transmitted back to the workstations. A file-request generation-module, also included in the NI Cache, transmits requests for data to the server, and receives responses from the server that include data missing from the cache.

Generally a computer network includes a file server (22), a network (26), and several client workstations (24). Specific network software provides a name server ('NS') (122) to resolve network-name requests. The computer network can also include a proxy for a network service, e.g. a network infrastructure cache (72) that stores files copied from the server (22). Automatic network-name-services configuration adds to this: 1) a traffic-monitor module (132) that identifies shared network services, and collects service use data; 2) a dynamic redirection service ('DRS') module (126) that receives the collected data, extracts therefrom pairs of client workstations (24) and services, employs a performance metric to order those pairs, and compiles a list (138) of workstations (24) and services that are assigned to the proxy; and 3) a name resolution filter ('NRF') module (136) that, receives the list (138) and network-name-resolution requests, and, when enabled by the list, resolves requests by sending network addresses for the proxy to client workstations (24).
