The Mission of the Jerusalem Apostles: An Authorial, Historical and Canonical Reconstruction Nathan Kin Yan Hui McMaster Divinity College Hamilton, Ontario Doctor ofPhilosophy (Christian Theology), 2014 This dissertation argues that the corpus of so-called Catholic Epistles in the New Testament canon, that is James, 1 and 2 Peter, 1, 2, and 3 John, and Jude, should be accurately called the Jerusalem Apostolic Epistles. These epistles were written by the alleged Jerusalem Apostles, namely James, Peter, John and Jude. Instead of looking at these writings separately, it is proposed that the mission of the Jerusalem Apostles can be discovered by an authorial, historical, and canonical reconstruction of their epistles if they are studied as a collection. These four canonical authors represented three locations of origin, James and Jude from Jerusalem to the Diaspora Jews, Peter from Rome to the Diaspora Jews of eastern Asia Minor, and John from Asia Minor to the vicinity. The seven epistles were closely knitted together like a web through various kinds of connections and similarities. In the process of the canonization of these epistles, we find that the Jerusalem Apostolicity representing the Jewish Christianity played a role in the church in, on the one hand, separating from first-century Judaism, and, on the other, counterbalancing the Gentile Christianity represented by Paulinism. The latter parting of the ways has been in existence from the days of the apostles to even the days of Augustine. The rise of heresies indirectly stimulated the making of creeds and regula fidei.

In a 1979 JETS article John Snyder called attention to the scholarly neglect of 2 Peter. To help address this situation, he provided a bibliography which he hoped would “stimulate a more aggressive and creative study of this still valuable letter.” 1 As the following bibliography suggests, there have been positive steps taken in this direction. 2 Two subsequent additions to Snyder’s collection ̃lled out the state of aˆairs in scholarly analysis of this writing up to 1982. 3 What follows is a collection of various contributions made to 2 Peter research since then.

HE majority of the so-called \"Apostolic Fathers\" are little more than names to us; their personalities are faint and shadowy. The men who wrote treatises like the Epistle of Barnabas and the Epistle to Diognetus or the homily called \"Second Clement\" reveal views rather than individual characteristics; even Clement of Rome's epistle is more interesting on account of its contents than on account of any self-revelation o the part of the writer. There is a partial exception, it is true, in The Shepherd of Hermas, for Hermas nai'vely reveals omething of himself at the beginning of his book, where the autobiographical d ta disclose a man of flesh and blood, with definite xperiences which throw some light upon his religious convictions. Hermas is indeed a second-rate Bunyan of the second century. Yet, after all, his introductory references to the grace which abounded toward him are on the circumference, and the bulk of his book is almost as impersonal as any church manual. It is otherwise with Ignatius of Antioch. Here we touch a vivid, vital personality. Sometime during the reign of Trajan he was arrested at Antioch in a persecution which soon blew over; probably it was one of the sporadic local outbursts which compelled the authorities to take action, and the animosity of the mob may have been appeased by the prompt seizure of

Scholars have always been aware of influence from the book of Daniel in the Synoptic Gospels. Various allusions to Daniel have been discussed in numerous articles, monographs and commentaries. Now we have for the first time a comprehensive look at all the possible allusions to Daniel in one study. All the cases are discussed and given an assessment of either 'no allusion', 'uncertain allusion', 'possible allusion', 'probable allusion', or 'certain allusion'. After reviewing the most common terminology and methodology used in scholarship in the area of literary influence (ch. 1), the bulk of the cases are discussed one by one in the following chapter (ch. 2), except those dealing specifically with the 'Son of Man' (ch. 3), the Olivet Discourse (ch. 4), and the 'Kingdom of God' (ch. 5). A concluding chapter summarizes the findings and shows some specific themes where the book of Daniel has influenced the Synoptics. The result of this study is that Daniel has shaped the language and phraseology of many sayings in the Gospels to a larger degree than many of us have thought, and that a fresh understanding of the Synoptic Jesus' strategy for kingdom-building appears. 

I began this study to see whether anything in the Apostolic Fathers might shed any light on the interpretation of 2 Peter. Other motivations have been added along the way. I soon ran into the claims of some that 2 Peter is not alluded to at all in the corpus of the Apostolic Fathers. Edwin Abbott provides an outstanding example of this.
