A double braided hollow rope assembly and method for making same wherein the rope consists of an inner hollow braided rope core and an outer braided rope jacket. The braid on the side of the outer jacket is opened and through that opening, a loop of the inner rope is pulled. A retaining ring with barbs formed thereon to engage the braids of the outer jacket is placed on the end of the rope to be spliced or formed into a loop or eye. The braid on the side of the inner core which has been pulled through the opening in the outer jacket is opened. The end of the rope with a retaining ring around it is inserted into the opening in the side of the hollow core of the inner rope. The outer jacket is then worked backwards until it once more covers the inner loop with the end of the rope with the retaining ring now contained within the hollow longitudinal central opening of the inner core. As an alternative, the end of the outer jacket may be retracted to thereby expose a few inches of the inner core which is then cut off and discarded. The outer jacket is then replaced in its normal position and the barbed retaining ring is applied to the jacket near its end where the core is now absent, whereupon the splicing and replacement of the jacket over the loop of the core is accomplished.

Double hollow braided rope assembly and method

A Gigli saw used by a surgeon to cut bones is constructed of a plurality of round wires which have been deformed in a coining stand so that they form one polygonal shape which in the preferred embodiment is square. This square strand is then twisted along its own axis in a given direction of lay. It is then heat-treated for stress relief and a plurality, such as three, of such strands are twisted together to form a cable. This results in a Gigli saw blade with many cutting edges formed at the edges of the polygon as each such edge is presented at the periphery of the cable. Preferably, the strands have a different number of twists from that of the cable, and are twisted in the opposite direction so that the cutting edges lie at about 5 to 15 degrees relative to the longitudinal axis of the cable. The foregoing abstract is merely a resume of one general application, is not a complete discussion of all principles of operation or applications, and is not to be construed as a limitation on the scope of the claimed subject matter.

Surgeon's Gigli saw and method

A stone sawing strand consists of a plurality of component wires twisted about their own axes in opposite directions, and wound together in a continuous unidirectional lay. The saw made from the strand is capable of cutting a straight kerf through the workpiece, despite the absence of lay reversal. Generally, the component wires will be of high carbon steel and of square cross-sectional configuration, and the strand can be produced at a high rate of speed on a bow stranding machine.

Strands and wire ropes composed of materials such as high carbon steels and stainless steels can be provided in a compacted, mechanically stress relieved and thermally stress relieved condition The wires are compacted during stranding to form the individual strands of the wire ropes The wires can be thermally stress relieved prior to stranding to remove tensile residual stresses Compaction produces a compressive residual stress state in the strands which increases fatigue resistance The strands can be thermally stress relieved subsequent to closing The wires and strands can be heated using a process such as induction heating The wire ropes can be torque balanced or rotation resistant The wire ropes have high strength, a high strength-to-weight ratio and enhanced fatigue life Stainless steel wire ropes also provide corrosion resistance

High-strength, fatigue resistant strands and wire ropes

A wire rope or cable splice assembly particularly for long splices in wire ropes or cables for uphill and overhead transportation systems such as ski lifts, overhead cable rides and the like. Cable ends to be joined together in such assemblies are frequently spliced by cross tucking corresponding strands of opposite ends of the cable into the core space at spaced regions along the cable length, the number of such tuck regions corresponding to the number of strands in the exterior lay of the cable. The invention provides a novel assembly of a protective metallic sheath for the portion of each strand tucked into the core space, as well as a void filling back-up member for the void formed in the tuck region or zone of crossover of end portions of corresponding strands of spliced opposing cable ends.
