TL;DR: In this article, a composite structure in which a foamed metal core is surrounded with a metal body is presented, in which the core has an essentially closed surface and the metal body has a closed surface.
Abstract: A method for producing a composite structure in which a foamed metal core ( 1 ) is surrounded with a metal body ( 3 ). The method includes the following steps: a) producing a foamed metal core ( 1 ) with an essentially closed surface; b) introducing the foamed metal core ( 1 ) into a pressure die-casting mold; c) filling the pressure die-casting mold at a first casting pressure (p 1 ); d) reducing the first casting pressure (p 1 ) before the pressure die-casting mold has been filled; e) filling the pressure die-casting mold entirely, the first casting pressure (p 1 ) being reduced to zero or almost zero; and f) applying a second casting pressure (p 2 ) and maintaining the second casting pressure for a predetermined holding period.

TL;DR: In this article, a method for producing a molded body from foamed metal is described, in which a first powder consisting of the metal and a second powder containing a foaming agent are fed to an extruder device, the first and second powders having a noncompact form.
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing a moulded body from foamed metal comprising the following steps: a) preparing a first powder consisting of the metal and a second powder consisting of a foaming agent b) feeding the first and the second powder to an extruder device, the first and second powder having a non-compact form c) transporting a powder mixture of the first and second powders in the extruder device towards a mould, whereby said mixture is partially melted and the partially melted powder mixture is then subjected to a pressure that is greater than the gas pressure caused by the foaming agent d) injecting the at least partially melted powder mixture into the mould, and e) relaxing the pressure to a value that is less than the gas pressure, so that the mould can be filled completely with the generated foamed metal.

TL;DR: The sponge-like structure has cells with cut out walls as mentioned in this paper and is made from aluminum, manganese, silicon, zinc, thorium, zirconium, or calcium.
Abstract: Production of locally reinforced light metal parts comprises placing a porous reinforcing element made from a sintered ceramic with a sponge-like structure on the site to be reinforced in a die casting mold; and infiltrating with a melt. An Independent claim is also included for a die cast light metal part infiltrated by a ceramic with a sponge-like structure. Preferred Features: The sponge-like structure has cells with cut out walls. The light metal is made from magnesium or magnesium alloy containing aluminum, manganese, silicon, zinc, thorium, zirconium or calcium. The ceramic is made from aluminum nitride, aluminum oxide, zirconium oxide, magnesium oxide, silicon carbide, silicon oxycarbide, silicon nitride or titanium nitride. The sponge-like structure has 19-60, preferably approximately 30 cells per centimeter.
