In the past two decades researchers in the field of sequencing and scheduling have analyzed several priority dispatching rules through simulation techniques. This paper presents a summary of over 100 such rules, a list of many references that analyze them, and a classification scheme.

A Survey of Scheduling Rules

In this paper, we survey the literature on heuristic priority rule-based job shop scheduling. Priority rules have been intensively investigated over the last 30 years by means of simulation experiments. They are also used in Shop Floor Control software systems. We present a classification, a characterization, and an evaluation of elementary priority rules. Some priority rule-related model extensions are discussed.

Operations related groups (ORGs): A clustering procedure for production/inventory systems

An individual seasonal indices (ISI) method and two group seasonal indices (GSI) methods proposed in the literature are compared, based on two models. Rules have been established to choose between these methods and insights are gained on the conditions under which one method outperforms the others. Simulation findings confirm that using the rules improves forecasting accuracy against universal application of these methods.

Use of individual and group seasonal indices in subaggregate demand forecasting

A flexible simulation system has been designed to permit investigation of sequencing rules in a large job shop, with continual input of new work. The objective is to understand what happens rather than to find optimum rules, with many conflicting measures of effectiveness: work in process, finished goods investment, delays, machine and labor utilization, and effort to implement. A few problem areas have been explored.
