An optoelectronic device for coupling between an external optical wave and a local optical wave. The local wave is supported by a multiplicity of electrodes and a structure associated with the electrodes. The electrodes are spaced in a substantially regular pattern and are adapted for two functions. First, the electrodes resonantly couple between the external wave and the local wave. Second, the electrodes allow a potential difference between adjacent electrodes.

Optoelectronic device for coupling between an external optical wave and a local optical wave for optical modulators and detectors

Optical device (T1) comprising a waveguide resonator (10), a photodetector (500) and the resonator is adapted to be evanescently coupled to an optical waveguide (F) and optically coupled to the photodetector (500) wherein the resonator is tunable. The device further comprises an intracavity element (50) optically coupled to the resonator, a control circuit element (100 arranged to tune the resonator and further comprising either a receiver (300) or an optical gain element (200). The optical gain device may be located on a loop or interconnecting two loops.

Wavelength division multiplexing optical communications systems.

Optoelectronic devices such as VCSEL and RCPD devices that have integrated resonant reflectors. The integrated resonant reflector may be made conductive so that bias current can pass therethrough. This may allow more flexibility in the design of the VCSEL and RCPD devices. Since making the resonant reflector more conductive typically reduces the overall reflectivity of the resonant reflector, the resonant reflector may be provided in combination with a Distributed Bragg Reflector (DBR) mirror to achieve the desired overall reflectance for a VCSEL or RCPD design. A broad bandwidth resonant reflector may also be provided. The bandwidth may be sufficiently wide to increase the reliability of data communication between such devices, and may be sufficiently narrow to maintain adequate mode control and mode stability. These devices may be used to support polarization-, space- and/or wavelength-division multiplexing applications.

Resonant reflector for improved optoelectronic device performance and enhanced applicability

An optical transmitter for generating a modulated optical signal for transmission over dispersive fiber optic links in which a broadband analog radio frequency signal input is applied to a modulation circuit for directly modulating a semiconductor laser with the analog signal input. The transmitter may further include a temperature sensor in proximity to the laser and a negative feedback control circuit coupled to the temperature sensor for adjusting the temperature of the laser in response to an output characteristic of the laser, such as linearity.

Directly modulated laser optical transmission system

A wavelength filtering device and system in which an optical resonant cavity is laterally coupled to a trunk waveguide carrying a broad range of wavelengths in the optical spectrum. The filtering cavities may be linear optical fiber segments or fiber segments closed at their ends in the shape of a loop. The devices may include single or multiple optical cavities or hybrid filtering utilizing both dispersive and resonant functions.

Optical resonant cavity filters

An optical coupler for a fiber optic communication system, which couples one band of wavelengths out of the fiber while allowing others to be carried further. This allows wavelength division multiplexing of different signals within a single fiber. The preferred embodiment of the invention is comprised of a waveguide having aperiodic corrugations in one wall and a Fabry-Perot type resonator enclosing the waveguide around the corrugations with its axis transverse thereto.
