Conflicts in natural and cultural resource management: Archaeological site disturbances by seals and sea lions on California's Northern Channel Islands

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used archaeological excavations from a prehistoric village on San Miguel Island to illustrate the adverse effects pinnipeds can have on archaeological sites and found that nearly 10,000 kg of shellfish remains, 840,000 animal bones, and 1700 formal artifacts were lost to erosion caused by the activities of seals and sea lions.
Journal ArticleDOI

A novel gammaherpesvirus in northern fur seals (callorhinus ursinus) is closely related to the california sea lion (zalophus californianus) carcinoma-associated otarine herpesvirus-1

TL;DR: A new Otarine herpesvirus found in vaginal swabs from NFS is described, herein called OtHV4, and the identification of a virus highly similar to the carcinoma-associated OtHHV1 in a sympatric species without carcinoma suggests that comparative genomics of OtHVs1 and OtV4 may identify candidate viral oncogenes.

Halothane anesthesia as a method of immobilizing free-ranging california sea lions (zalophus californianus)

TL;DR: Adults had significantly lower heart and respiratory rates than pups, although induction, anesthesia, and recovery times did not differ between age groups, and time of capture, induction, and duration of anesthesia were recorded.
