Six adult and three juvenile honey buzzards Pernis apivorus were radio-tracked by satellite during autumn migration from southwestern Sweden. All adults crossed the Mediterranean Sea at the Strait of Gibraltar and continued across the Sahara desert to winter in West Africa, from Sierra Leone to Cameroon. Analysing three main steps of the migration, (1) from the breeding site to the southern Mediterranean region, (2) across the Sahara and (3) from the southern Sahara to the wintering sites, the adults changed direction significantly between these steps, and migrated along a distinct large-scale detour. In contrast, the juveniles travelled in more southerly directions, crossed the Mediterranean Sea at various places, but still ended up in the same wintering areas as the adults. Average speeds maintained on travelling days were similar for the two age groups, about 170 km/day in Europe, 270 km/day across Sahara and 125 km/day in Africa south of Sahara. However, as the adults used fewer stopover days en route, they maintained higher mean overall speeds and completed migration in a shorter time (42 days) than the juveniles (64 days). Although the juveniles set out on more direct courses towards the wintering grounds, they did not cover significantly shorter distances than the adults, as they tended to show a larger directional scatter between shorter flight segments. The results corroborate previous suggestions that adult and juvenile honey buzzards follow different routes during autumn migration, and that the birds change migration strategy during their lifetime. While juveniles may use individual vector orientation, social influences and learning may be of great importance for the detour migration of adults. The remarkable and distinct age-dependent shift in migratory route and orientation of the honey buzzard provides a challenging evolutionary problem.

The present study is a meta-analysis of competency to stand trial research. One meta-analysis was previously conducted in this area, but the large number of empirical studies that have been conducted since and the introduction of new instruments and revision of old instruments warranted updating and expanding upon the previously conducted study via contemporary meta-analytic methods. We metaanalyzed 68 studies published between 1967 and 2008 that compared competent and incompetent defendants on a number of demographic, psychiatric, and criminological variables. Categorical and continuous variables commonly investigated in competency research were coded and aggregated to generate cumulative effect sizes in the form of odds ratios and Cohen’s d statistics, and moderation was tested via meta-F and meta-regression analyses. The most robust findings were that defendants diagnosed with a Psychotic Disorder were approximately eight times more likely to be found incompetent than defendants without a Psychotic Disorder diagnosis and the likelihood of being found incompetent was approximately double for unemployed defendants as compared to employed defendants. The likelihood of being found incompetent was also double for defendants with a previous psychiatric hospitalization compared to those without a hospitalization history. A meta-analytic review of competency to stand trial research

Because the trier of fact determines the weight to be assigned to an examiner's opinion by assessing the strength and persuasiveness of his or her analysis of the data, it is essential that forensic reports communicate the examiner's reasoning process. This study analyzes community examiners' reports on competence to stand trial (CST), emphasizing the nature of examiners' (1) expressed conceptualizations of CST and (2) reasoning establishing a nexus between CST impairments and symptoms of psychopathology. Expert raters coded 100 randomly selected CST reports with respect to a variety of issues, including the examiners' description of the defendant's psycholegal deficits, provision of specific reasoning to link these deficits to psychopathology, and agreement with a paired examiner's global and specific opinions about the defendant's impairments. CST reports were found to (1) reflect basic operationalizations of competence that fail to incorporate legally relevant facets such as a defendant's decisional capacities and (2) adequately document clinical findings, but fail to describe the reasoning underlying psycholegal conclusions. Examiners demonstrated moderately high levels of agreement on defendant's global CST, but expressed radically divergent bases for this opinion. These findings are discussed in light of legal, ethical, and professional standards of practice.

The credibility of children's allegations of sexual abuse

The inadequate state of empirical knowledge about the special offender populations analyzed in this book is epitomized by the research on defendants found incompetent to stand trial (IST). This group, which comprises about 32% of the admissions of mentally disordered offenders (Steadman et al., 1981), is the group for which the largest body of research exists. Yet, as we shall see in this chapter, even this is quite inadequate. It is inadequate in understanding: (1) how incompetency currently is working across various jurisdictions; (2) trends over time in the use of incompetency either within or across jurisdictions; and (3) how appropriate public policy, clinical practices, and legal statutes might be developed.
