In this article the author proposes an episodic theory of spoken word representation, perception, and production. By most theories, idiosyncratic aspects of speech (voice details, ambient noise, etc.) are considered noise and are filtered in perception. However, episodic theories suggest that perceptual details are stored in memory and are integral to later perception. In this research the author tested an episodic model (MINERVA 2; D. L. Hintzman, 1986) against speech production data from a word-shadowing task. The model predicted the shadowing-response-time patterns, and it correctly predicted a tendency for shadowers to spontaneously imitate the acoustic patterns of words and nonwords. It also correctly predicted imitation strength as a function of "abstract" stimulus properties, such as word frequency. Taken together, the data and theory suggest that detailed episodes constitute the basic substrate of the mental lexicon. Early in the 20th century, Semon (1909/1923) described a memory theory that anticipated many aspects of contemporary theories (Schacter, Eich, & Tulving, 1978). In modem parlance, this was an episodic (or exemplar) theory, which assumes that every experience, such as perceiving a spoken word, leaves a unique memory trace. On presentation of a new word, all stored traces are activated, each according to its similarity to the stimulus. The most activated traces connect the new word to stored knowledge, the essence of recognition. Publisher Summary Environmental noise can affect acoustic communication through limiting the broadcast area, or active space, of a signal by decreasing signal-to-noise ratios at the position of the receiver. At the same time, noise is ubiquitous in all habitats and is, therefore, likely to disturb animals, as well as humans, under many circumstances. However, both animals and humans have evolved diverse solutions to the background noise problem, and this chapter reviews recent advancements in studies of vocal adaptations to interference by background noise and relate these to fundamental issues in sound perception. The chapter starts with the discussion of sender's side by considering potential evolutionary shaping of species-specific signal characteristics and individual short‐term adjustments of signal features. Subsequently, it focuses on the receivers of signals and reviews their sensory capacities for signal detection, recognition, and discrimination and relates these issues to auditory scene analysis and the ecological concept of signal space. The data from studies on insects, anurans, birds, and mammals, including humans, and to a lesser extent available work on fish and reptiles is also discussed in the chapter.

Acoustic Communication in Noise

This article presents a review of the effects of adverse conditions (ACs) on the perceptual, linguistic, cognitive, and neurophysiological mechanisms underlying speech recognition. The review starts with a classification of ACs based on their origin: Degradation at the source (production of a noncanonical signal), degradation during signal transmission (interfering signal or medium-induced impoverishment of the target signal), receiver limitations (peripheral, linguistic, cognitive). This is followed by a parallel, yet orthogonal classification of ACs based on the locus of their effect: Perceptual processes, mental representations, attention, and memory functions. We then review the added value that ACs provide for theories of speech recognition, with a focus on fundamental themes in psycholinguistics: Content and format of lexical representations, time-course of lexical access, word segmentation, feed-back in speech perception and recognition, lexicalsemantic integration, interface between the speech system and general cognition, neuroanatomical organisation of speech processing. We conclude by advocating an approach to speech recognition that includes rather than neutralises complex listening environments and individual differences.

Speech recognition in adverse conditions: A review

Acoustic observations are reported for English front vowels embedded in a /w—l/ frame and carrying constant main stress. The vowels were produced by five speakers in clear and citation‐form styles at varying durations but at a constant speaking rate. The acoustic analyses revealed (i) that formant patterns were systematically displaced in the direction of the frequencies of the consonants of the adjacent pseudosymmetrical context; (ii) that those displacements depended in a lawful manner on vowel duration; (iii) that this context and duration dependence was more limited for clear than for citation‐form speech, and that the smaller formant shifts of clear speech tended to be achieved by increases in the rate of formant frequency change. The findings are compatible with a revised, and biomechanically motivated, version of the vowel undershoot model [Lindblom, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 35, 1773–1781 (1963)] that derives formant patterns from numerical information on three variables: The ‘‘locus‐target’’ distance, vowel duration, and rate of formant frequency change. The results further indicate that the ‘‘clear’’ samples were not merely louder, but involved a systematic, undershoot‐compensating reorganization of the acoustic patterns.

Interaction between duration, context, and speaking style in English stressed vowels

This collection of recent papers in Laboratory Phonology approaches phonological theory from several different empirical directions. Psycholinguistic research into the perception and production of speech has produced results that challenge current conceptions about phonological structure. Field work studies provide fresh insights into the structure of phonological features, and the phonology-phonetics interface is investigated in phonetic research involving both segments and prosody, while the role of underspecification is put to the test in automatic speech recognition.

Acoustical analyses were carried out on a set of utterances produced by two male speakers talking in quiet and in 80, 90, and 100 dB SPL of masking noise. In addition to replicating previous studies demonstrating increases in amplitude, duration, and vocal pitch while talking in noise, these analyses also found reliable differences in the formant frequencies and short‐term spectra of vowels. Perceptual experiments were also conducted to assess the intelligibility of utterances produced in quiet and in noise when they were presented at equal S/N ratios for identification. In each experiment, utterances originally produced in noise were found to be more intelligible than utterances produced in the quiet. The results of the acoustic analyses showed clear and consistent differences in the acoustic–phonetic characteristics of speech produced in quiet versus noisy environments. Moreover, these acoustic differences produced reliable effects on intelligibility. The findings are discussed in terms of: (1) the nature of the acoustic changes that take place when speakers produce speech under adverse conditions such as noise, psychological stress, or high cognitive load; (2) the role of training and feedback in controlling and modifying a talker’s speech to improve performance of current speech recognizers; and (3) the development of robust algorithms for recognition of speech in noise.

This study investigated the hypothesis by Lieberman (1963) that speakers adjust the intelligibility information in words in a sentence in inverse relation to the semantic and grammatical information content of the sentence. The experiments examined the relationship between context and intelligibility for single words produced in word lists, in ordinary sentences and in anomalous sentences. in the first experiment performance was found to be at the same level on words from sentences, anomalous sentences, and word lists. in the second and third experiments the effect of text format on a difference in intelligibility between sentence-produced and list-produced words was examined. It was shown that the intelligibility of words from list context was superior where the sentence and list context materials to be produced by the speaker were separated for the production task.
