TL;DR: The Canadian State as mentioned in this paper was the coming-of-age book of a new generation of Canadian political economists, who were too late to have been scarred by Stalinism, but they had their own debacle to contend with: the collapse of the New Left as a political force.
Abstract: It is over ten years since The Canadian State appeared.
That book marked the coming of age of a new generation
of Canadian political economists. It also focussed attention on a renewed intellectual vitality among Canadian socialists. Its authors had been born too late to have been scarred by Stalinism, but they had their own debacle to contend with: the collapse of the New Left as a political force. The New Left had arisen in response to Stalinism and social democracy.
