A bumper for motor vehicles, with the bumper having an extruded basic element having a shaped retaining rail adapted to accept an impact plate of a shock absorber. The impact plate is floatingly mounted in an elastomeric element. The elastomeric element is pushed into the retaining rail and the retaining rail is provided with recesses adapted to accept associated projections provided on the elastomeric element in a supporting fashion when an installation position of the bumper is reached.

Shear action and compression energy absorber

A method of producing a vehicle body structure having a pipe-shaped structural part reinforced with a hard and high density foamed polyurethane resin. The method is carried out as follows: First, a plurality of pressed panels are prepared, the pressed panels being to be joined to form the pipe-shaped structural part. A band-shaped foamable rubber which has not yet foamed is attached onto the inner surface of each of a plurality of panels at a predetermined position. The panels are joined to form the pipe-shaped structural part. The foamable rubber is foamed under heating in a painting step to form a foamed rubber at the predetermined position. Then, a foamed member of a soft foamed polyurethane resin is inserted into an opening formed within the pipe-shaped structural part and defined by the foamed rubber in order to constitute a dam section for blocking the pipe-shaped structural part at the predetermined position. Thereafter, the material of a hard and high density foamed polyurethane resin is poured into a space defined by the dam section within the pipe-shaped structural part and hardened within the pipe-shaped structural part.

Vehicle body structure producing method and flowable resin damming arrangement therefor

An impact-absorbing compressible member includes a thin-walled enclosure defining an inner chamber containing a volume of fluid such as air. The enclosure includes one or more orifices which as sized and positioned to allow air to vent from the inner chamber in response to an impact on the member and to refill the inner chamber in response to an impact on the member and to refill the inner chamber after the impact is released. The enclosure is formed of a blow-molded thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) material which is economical to make and durable in use. The compressible members can be used as building blocks for impact-absorbing shell structures for a wide variety of application such helmets, protective pads for body parts, sports arena wall padding, vehicular bumpers, dashboards and the like. The compressible member has impact-absorbing advantages over conventional foams currently used in those applications.

Air venting, impact-absorbing compressible members

An impact absorber is disclosed herein having a single or a pair of box-beam inflatable members arranged in guided sliding relationship. Elongated slots and shear bolts cooperate to releasably couple the inflatable members together so as to absorb shock prior to shearing. A resilient inflatable block is carried on the forward terminating end of one beam member while a resilient pad is carried on the terminating end of the other beam member in alignment to interfere with the sliding movement of the first member. The various impact-absorbing elements are arranged in a series for sequential actuation upon application of an impact. The inflatable block absorbs shock first, followed by the shear bolts and finally the resilient pad.

Impact absorber for vehicles

A shock absorbing bumper comprising an impact distribution plate, a core of shock absorbing material, and a backing plate. The impact distribution plate may be made of steel or a rigid plastic and may be on the outer surface of the shock absorbing material or imbedded therein. The shock absorbing core consists of a foamed plastic material such as a polyurethane cellular foam and preferably consists of a high density, tight cell polyurethane foam. Connector pins attach the impact distribution plate slidably into the backing plate so that the impact plate is supported by the backing plate against forces applied substantially parallel to the impact plate but will not directly transmit to the backing plate impact forces applied substantially perpendicularly to the impact plate. The bumper may be mounted with shock absorbing springs which deflect upon impact. The bumper may be formed with a projecting leading edge. Apertures may be provided in the backing plate to permit the escape of compressed gas from the foam.

Shock absorbing bumper

The bumper consists of a body of absorbing material e.g. tight cell polyurethane foam, which receives the impact through a load distributing plate and transmits it to a backing plate which is arranged for connection to the vehicle. Pref. the plates are slidably connected by stems on one engaged in guideson the other. The bumper will take vertical loads and can be safely stood upon or used for jacking the car up.
