This article presents the starting case for applying the elements of trauma-informed care (TIC) to education and outlines the authors’ initial efforts to develop guidelines for what they call trauma-informed educational practice. To this end, the article starts with a literature review related to the potential for vicarious traumatization and retraumatization among students in clinical training, followed by a discussion of the TIC framework and past efforts to be trauma sensitive in social work education. The authors then describe what drew them to this perspective and inspired them to apply it to educational practice. They then present guidelines for implementing the trauma-informed principle of safety in the classroom in several domains.

Practicing What We Teach: Trauma-Informed Educational Practice

This article examines the connections between mental illness and terrorism. Most social scientists have discounted a causal relationship between mental illness and terrorism. This is not necessarily always the case within terrorism studies, the media, or political circles where the psychology of terrorism is often expressed in the language of mentalisms, and theories of pathologisation continue to exist. This article reaffirms the view that apart from certain pathological cases, there is no causal connection between an individual's mental disorder and engagement in terrorist activity. The individual terrorist's motivations can be explained by other factors, including behavioural psychology. However, there may be a connection between an individual engaging in terrorist activity and developing a mental disorder[s]. Certain stressors that occur because of terrorist activity may result in psychological disturbance in terrorist individuals. These factors may partially explain terrorist group instability and should be taken into account when detaining and interrogating terrorist suspects.

Terrorism and Mental Illness: Is there a Relationship?

Abuse is a major source of trauma to women, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) results from exposure to extreme trauma. To describe the relationship between symptoms of PTSD and severity of abuse, an ethnically stratified cohort of 131 abused women in a primary care setting was interviewed. Symptoms of PTSD, both intrusion (i.e., trouble falling asleep, strong waves of feelings about the abuse) and avoidance (i.e., trying not to think or talk about the abuse, staying away from reminders of the abuse), were significantly (p < 0.01) correlated to severity of abuse, regardless of ethnicity. When asked about childhood physical or sexual abuse, women reporting physical abuse had significantly (p < 0.05) higher intrusion scores, whereas those reporting sexual abuse had significantly (p < 0.004) higher avoidance scores. Symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder in Abused Women in a Primary Care Setting

Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) has been linked to a variety of health problems in adolescence and adulthood, including risky sexual behaviour and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). This article reviews the literature, including findings from a recent intervention study of high-risk, adult women and offers suggestions for professionals working in STD/HIV prevention.

Since the 1950s, people with mental illness and their families have been organizing a wide range of self-directed, mutual support oriented initiatives, including self-help groups, nonprofit organizations, and businesses. These initiatives have become increasingly widespread over the years and today mental health self-help initiatives outnumber traditional mental health organizations in the United States (Goldstrom et al., Admin Policy Mental Health Mental Health Serv Res 33:92–103, 2006). Mental health self-help embodies much of what community psychologists promote, including the self-directed organization of people to create social change and facilitate personal transformation. This special issue provides new insight into several prominent areas of inquiry surrounding these low-cost interventions including: (1) their evidence base; (2) the processes by which people benefit; (3) how they interface with the mental health system; and (4) the value dilemmas they face.

Introduction to the Special Issue on Mental Health Self‐Help

While the concept of traumatic stress plays an intrinsic part in the diagnosis and treatment of adult incest survivors, the developmental framework within which the victimization has occurred may be overlooked. This paper presents a treatment model that integrates theories of post-traumatic stress and early environmental trauma. A profile of women incest survivors is given and an overview of treatment strategies utilizing the above theories is discussed.

Teaching Trauma: A True Story

This article describes the role of a special faculty advisor, the Professional Development Counselor, in utilizing group work techniques and stages of group development to facilitate minority students' professional development as they successfully engage in and complete an MSW work-study program. It also outlines the history of the program, and discusses the use and results of an evaluation survey to measure the program's graduates' perceptions of their experiences and views of professional self.
