Indoor localization has recently witnessed an increase in interest, due to the potential wide range of services it can provide by leveraging Internet of Things (IoT), and ubiquitous connectivity. Different techniques, wireless technologies and mechanisms have been proposed in the literature to provide indoor localization services in order to improve the services provided to the users. However, there is a lack of an up-to-date survey paper that incorporates some of the recently proposed accurate and reliable localization systems. In this paper, we aim to provide a detailed survey of different indoor localization techniques, such as angle of arrival (AoA), time of flight (ToF), return time of flight (RTOF), and received signal strength (RSS); based on technologies, such as WiFi, radio frequency identification device (RFID), ultra wideband (UWB), Bluetooth, and systems that have been proposed in the literature. This paper primarily discusses localization and positioning of human users and their devices. We highlight the strengths of the existing systems proposed in the literature. In contrast with the existing surveys, we also evaluate different systems from the perspective of energy efficiency, availability, cost, reception range, latency, scalability, and tracking accuracy. Rather than comparing the technologies or techniques, we compare the localization systems and summarize their working principle. We also discuss remaining challenges to accurate indoor localization.

A Survey of Indoor Localization Systems and Technologies

During the past 20 years, research in the behavioral sciences has become increasingly sophisticated. New findings concerning the brain and behavior have forced upon us the unpleasant necessity of reexamining our models. Concepts once useful, such as "the unconscious," "regression," and "motivation," no longer serve to adequately encompass the data. Ashby is a representative of this new order of sophistication in research, as he proceeds to investigate the problem of the brain's orderliness. He accepts, as fact, that the nervous system behaves adaptively and assumes that it is, in its essentials, mechanistic. These two data are approached as not irreconcilable. From this point, he proceeds to examine dynamic systems from the standpoint of rigorous scientific —dominantly mathematical—logic until he has evolved a theoretical counterpart of brain functioning. Design for a Brain

Multi-agent systems is a subfield of Distributed Artificial Intelligence that has experienced rapid growth because of the flexibility and the intelligence available solve distributed problems. In this chapter, a brief survey of multi-agent systems has been presented. These encompass different attributes such as architecture, communication, coordination strategies, decision making and learning abilities. The goal of this chapter is to provide a quick reference to assist in the design of multi-agent systems and to highlight the merit and demerits of the existing methods.

An Introduction to Multi-Agent Systems

The main goal of this article is to review certain aspects of the circuitry of the human cerebral cortex that may be particularly relevant for the development, maintenance or spread of seizures. There are a number of different structural abnormalities that are commonly found in the cortex of epileptic patients, but these abnormalities do not appear to be intrinsically epileptogenic, since some patients displaying them are epileptic (after variable delays) whereas others are not. Therefore, cortical circuits in an affected brain may undergo a series of changes that finally cause epilepsy. In this article, it is proposed that the chandelier cell, which is considered to be the most powerful cortical GABAergic inhibitory interneuron, is probably a key component of cortical circuits in the establishment of human intractable temporal lobe epilepsy. These cells (among other types) have been found to be lost or reduced at epileptic foci in both experimental animals and epileptic patients. A hypothesis is presented by which the normal variability in the number of interneurons might explain the predisposition of some individuals to develop epilepsy more than others as a result of a lesion or other precipitating factors that lead to loss of neurons. The sources of GABAergic input on dendrites and somata of cortical pyramidal cells originate from many and diverse types of interneurons but, at the level of the axon initial segment of these cells, all synapses come from a few chandelier cells (five or less). Loss of one class of interneurons ending on soma and dendrites might have relatively little impact on the inhibitory control of the pyramidal cell. However, if chandelier cells were affected, it would have serious consequences for the inhibitory control of the pyramidal cells. Evidence suggests that the loss of chandelier cells may be non-specific and that when this occurs epilepsy may develop. Therefore, these cells might represent a key component in the aetiology of human temporal lobe epilepsy.

Biological and Artificial Computation: From Neuroscience to Technology

Bluetooth low energy (BLE) technology coupled with fingerprinting provides a simple way to position users with high accuracy in indoor environments. In this paper, we study the effect of BLE protocols and channels on indoor positioning using different distance and similarity measures in a controlled environment. With the aim of reproducing a real positioning system situation, we also study the effect of the user’s orientation in the positioning phase and, consequently, provide accuracy and precision results for each orientation. In a 168-m2 testbed, 12 beacons configured to broadcast with the Eddystone and iBeacon protocols were deployed and 40 distance/similarity measures were considered. According to our results, in a specific orientation there is a group of distance metrics coupled with a protocol-channel combination that produces similar accuracy results. Therefore, choosing the right distance metric in that specific orientation is not as critical as choosing the right protocol and, especially, the right channel. There is a trend whereby the protocol-channel combination that provides the best accuracy is almost unique for each orientation. Depending on the orientation, the accuracies obtained for the abovementioned group of distances are within the range of 1.1–1.5 m and the precisions are 90% within the range of 1.5–2.5 m.
