An attempt is made in This work to present critical literature review and an up-to-date and exhaustive bibliography on the AGC of power systems. Various control aspects concerning the AGC problem have been highlighted. AGC schemes based on parameters, such as linear and nonlinear power system models, classical and optimal control, and centralized, decentralized, and multilevel control, are discussed. AGC strategies based on digital, self-tuning control, adaptive, VSS systems, and intelligent/soft computing control have been included. Finally, the investigations on AGC systems incorporating BES/SMES, wind turbines, FACTS devices, and PV systems have also been discussed.

Recent philosophies of automatic generation control strategies in power systems

A survey is presented of papers and reports that address various aspects of economic dispatch. The time period considered is 1977-88. Four related areas of economic dispatch are identified and papers published in the general areas of economic dispatch are classified into these. A review of recent advances in economic dispatch

This paper provides the analytical basis for an application of slow coherency theory to the design of an islanding scheme, which is employed as an important part of a corrective control strategy to deal with large disturbances. The analysis is conducted under varying networks conditions and loading conditions. The results indicate that the slow coherency based grouping is almost insensitive to locations and severity of the initial faults. However, because of the loosely coherent generators and physical constraints the islands formed change slightly based on location and severity of the disturbance, and loading conditions. A detailed description of the procedure to form the islands after having determined the grouping of generators using slow coherency is presented. The verification of the islanding scheme is proven with simulations on a 179-bus, 29-generator test system.

Slow coherency-based islanding

This paper provides a self-healing strategy to deal with catastrophic events when power system vulnerability analysis indicates that the system is approaching an extreme emergency state. In the authors' approach, the system is adaptively divided into smaller islands with consideration of quick restoration. Then, a load shedding scheme based on the rate of frequency decline is applied. The proposed scheme is tested on a 179-bus, 20-generator sample system and shows very good performance.

This paper describes the development and evaluation of a method for identifying the coherency behavior of generators for various power system disturbances. This information is used as a basis for forming dynamic equivalents which can be applied in transient stability studies.

Identification of Coherent Generators for Dynamic Equivalents

This paper describes the development and evaluation of a system to calculate temperatures and ratings of HPOF pipe-type cables in real-time. Algorithms applying modern estimation and identification technology to perform these tasks have been designed and demonstrated on two operational cables. Test results give estimates of conductor temperature within ±7% of the actual conductor temperature over a 0°C-125 °C range.

Monitoring and Rating of Underground Power Cables

A set of procedures and algorithms are developed for automatic generation control of generating units that are jointly-owned by two or more utilities. The control performance is examined using the results of simulation tests. Recommendations are given for future work on improved procedures for coordinated economic dispatch involving jointly-owned generating units.
