Original communications Should we be performing more randomized controlled trials evaluating surgical operations

TL;DR: In this article, the authors determined what proportion of clinical treatment evaluation questions involving surgical operations could be answered by a randomized controlled trial (RCT), and for those questions not amenable to a RCT, to determine the problems that potentially preclude the initiation of RCT in an ideal clinical research setting.
Journal Article

Epidemiologic features of acute appendicitis in Ontario, Canada.

TL;DR: The frequency of acute appendicitis appears to be decreasing whereas the proportion of cases with perforation seems to be increasing, which may reflect a change in the population structure in Ontario and restrictions placed on the patient access to the health care system.
Journal ArticleDOI

Risk of small bowel obstruction after the ileal pouch-anal anastomosis.

TL;DR: The risk of SBO after IPAA is high, although most do not require surgical intervention, and strategies that reduce the risk of adhesions are warranted in this group of patients to improve patient outcome and decrease healthcare costs.
Journal Article

A meta-analysis of laparoscopic versus open appendectomy in patients suspected of having acute appendicitis.

TL;DR: It is suggested that operating room time is significantly longer, hospital stay is unchanged but return to normal activities is significantly earlier with LA, and the random-effects model was used for statistical analysis.
Journal Article

Canadian Association of General Surgeons Evidence Based Reviews in Surgery. 10. Laparoscopy-assisted colectomy versus open colectomy for treatment of non-metastatic colon cancer: a randomized trial.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors compared laparoscopic assisted colectomy (LAC) and open colectomation (OC) for adenocarcinoma of the colon.
