Intelligent tutoring systems (ITSs) have been successful at improving students' performance across a variety of domains. To help achieve this widespread success, researchers have identified important behavioral and performance measures that can be used to guide instruction and feedback. Most systems, however, do not present these measures to the teachers who employ the systems in classrooms. The current paper discusses visualizations that will be displayed to teachers using the writing strategy tutor, Writing Pal. We present visualizations for both classroom and student level data and offer descriptions of each.

How to Visualize Success: Presenting Complex Data in a Writing Strategy Tutor.

This study investigated the effect of incorporating spelling and grammar checking tools within an automated writing tutoring system, Writing Pal. High school students (n = 119) wrote and revised six persuasive essays. After initial drafts, all students received formative feedback about writing strategies. Half of the participants were also given access to spelling and grammar checking tools during the writing and revision periods. Linear mixed effects models revealed that essay quality for students in both conditions improved from initial draft to revision in terms of all aspects except essay unity. The availability of spelling and grammar checking yielded added improvements from initial draft to revision for several aspects of essay quality (i.e., conclusion, organization, voice, grammar/mechanics, and word choice), but other aspects were unaffected (i.e., introduction, body, unity, and sentence structure). The availability of spelling and grammar checking tools had no effect on holistic essay scores. These results indicate that automated spelling and grammar feedback contribute to modest, incremental improvements in writing quality that may complement automated strategy feedback.

Checking It Twice: Does Adding Spelling and Grammar Checkers Improve Essay Quality in an Automated Writing Tutor?.

Experts in human factors and ergonomics (HF/E) and related fields have the ability and responsibility to broadly serve  the needs and goals of diverse people, which encompasses issues of inclusion, equity, and justice. Importantly, HF/E designers, researchers, and practitioners can address these aims both as the intended outcomes of their work and how the work itself is conducted. Both pathways support progress toward more inclusive and equitable organizations and societies. This paper focuses upon one aspect of inclusive methodology—strategies for inclusive sampling. Sampling is an important focus because of its fundamental role in defining the internal and external validity of findings. Moreover, sampling is how diverse participants and perspectives are incorporated (or not), and thus represents an early way that exclusion, inequity, or inaccessibility may manifest. Three heuristic questions and six sets of strategies are briefly articulated: (1) purposive sampling, (2) oversampling, (3) community sampling, (4) removing barriers of distance, cost, communication, and awareness, (5) building trust, and (6) inclusive demographic categories. A variety of sources are cited to facilitate readers’ further consideration of these issues in their own HF/E endeavors.
