A centrifuge including a drive head attached to a rotation shaft and a rotor adapted to be removably mounted on the drive head in a rotational driving position and which is coupled thereto during rotation of the drive head. The centrifuge includes elements for axially locking the rotor to the drive head by applying to the rotor an axial retaining force that increases with the rotational speed of the drive head.

A cover having a free-turning knob in its center for use on the rotor of a centrifuge. The knob includes tool means for coupling the knob with a threaded fastener securing the rotor to a drive shaft. Thus, when the cover is positioned on the rotor, the threaded fastener securing the rotor can be tightened or loosened by a turning of the knob. The rotor can thereby be removed and replaced without the use of external tools.

Cover for centrifuge rotor

A centrifuge rotor lid (44) assembly which includes a handle (64) which allows convenient handling of a centrifuge rotor (30) and provides a means of releasing the lid (44) from the rotor (30) after centrifugation. In the described embodiment, the lid (44) is provided with a lid knob (48) and a spindle knob (50) in a coaxial sliding arrangement. The lid knob (48) is used to tighten the lid (44) on the rotor body (30) and the spindle knob (50) is used to tighten the rotor (30) to the centrifuge drive spindle (36). The upper end of the inner knob (50) is provided with a handle (64) which extends perpendicular to the axis of the knob. This handle (64) is used for lifting the rotor (30) after the spindle knob (50) has been unscrewed from the spindle (36) and for unscrewing the lid knob (48). The lower end of the spindle knob (50) has a pin (66) which cooperatively engages the lower end of the lid knob (48) when the spindle knob (50) is lifted from the rotor (30) and is turned in a direction to unscrew the lid knob (48). The handle provides the necessary mechanical advantage for a person to exert sufficient torque to unscrew the lid knob (48) without the use of external tools.

A sealed bowl rotor having a transparent lid for easy visual checking of rotor contents. The lid has sealing means that automatically creates a seal which prevents the escape of liquid samples from within the rotor when the lid is placed on the rotor. The rotor design prevents the application of any possible hydraulic loading on the transparent lid. The installing/removing mechanism on the lid provides the capability for removal of the lid after the centrifugation run without disturbing the contents of the samples within the rotor.

Aerosol resistant bowl rotor

A rotor cover attach and release apparatus for use with a centrifuge. The apparatus includes a knob, a cover and housing that are both affixed to the knob. The apparatus also includes an adapter having detents pitched at an angle, that is connected to the housing along with a plunger that is disposed within the knob and housing. In addition, the apparatus has a first moveable element that is retained within a passage located on the housing and a biasing element located within the housing. The apparatus additionally includes a plurality of sealing elements.

Cover attachment method and apparatus

There is disclosed a cover for a centrifuge rotor which is affixed thereto by being screwed onto the hub of the rotor. The cover is constructed in a manner to provide a depending skirt which seats against an upstanding rim of a rotor of a centrifuge. This cover is constructed to seat tighter under the centrifugal forces encountered whereby a portion of the skirt is urged outwardly and down against the seat on the rim. The cover is also designed to have an annular well for collecting small quantities of overflow fluid. The cover is also consructed with a means to preliminarily provide communication between the outside and inside the rotor of the centrifuge in order to establish equilibrium therebetween prior to removal of the cover.
