Mind, Self and Society from the Standpoint of a Social Behaviorist

How have changes in media affected our everyday experience, behavior, and sense of identity? Such questions have generated endless arguments and speculations, but no thinker has addressed the issue with such force and originality as Joshua Meyrowitz in No Sense of Place. Advancing a daring and sophisticated theory, Meyrowitz shows how television and other electronic media have created new social situations that are no longer shaped by where we are or who is "with" us. While other media experts have limited the debate to message content, Meyrowitz focuses on the ways in which changes in media rearrange "who knows what about whom" and "who knows what compared to whom," making it impossible for us to behave with each other in traditional ways. No Sense of Place explains how the electronic landscape has encouraged the development of: -More adultlike children and more childlike adults; -More career-oriented women and more family-oriented men; and -Leaders who try to act more like the "person next door" and real neighbors who want to have a greater say in local, national, and international affairs. The dramatic changes fostered by electronic media, notes Meyrowitz, are neither entirely good nor entirely bad. In some ways, we are returning to older, pre-literate forms of social behavior, becoming "hunters and gatherers of an information age." In other ways, we are rushing forward into a new social world. New media have helped to liberate many people from restrictive, place-defined roles, but the resulting heightened expectations have also led to new social tensions and frustrations. Once taken-for-granted behaviors are now subject to constant debate and negotiation. The book richly explicates the quadruple pun in its title: Changes in media transform how we sense information and how we make sense of our physical and social places in the world.

The Fall of Public Man

This analysis follows up work in the late 1970s analyzing Sports Illustrated’s coverage of women’s sports in Olympic years 1956, 1960, 1964, 1968, 1972, and 1976. This article analyzes feature articles in the first issue of each month of Sports Illustrated beginning in 1980, with 72 issues reviewed for total number of articles per issue, sex of athlete featured in each article, number of pages per article, and type of sport covered in each article. An exploration of photographs accompanying the articles is included. In all, 569 articles were reviewed. Although there was an increase in feature coverage of women’s sports in the early 1990s, the change in coverage for the entire period compared with the period analyzed previously was not significant in percentage of articles about women and percentage of pages devoted to coverage of women’s sports. The percentage of photos featuring women dropped dramatically from 1994 to 1996.

From behind the Walls: Boundary Work by News Organizations in Their Coverage of Princess Diana's Death

This paper explores the changing nature of professional sports logos, using semiotics and the work of postmodern writers like Baudrillard, Debord, and Jameson as its theoretical framework. Brandishing a professional sports team's logo was once a sign of allegiance; it signified the person's love for his/her favorite team. A number of forces, including television and the aggressive marketing of sports-related collectibles, have indelibly changed the relationship between fan and team. On one level, logos ‘imply social rapport and social power’ (Baudrillard 1983: 88). Wearing culturally endorsed logos of culturally endorsed teams guarantees status to the wearer. But, on another level, logos reveal the diminution of the fan's role. Fans have been reduced to buying an endless stream of team-related products, our actions ‘channeled into the global construction of the spectacle, as Debord would argue. Stealing the Signs: A Semiotic Analysis of the Changing Nature of Professional Sports Logos

A frame analysis was conducted on newspaper articles, news magazine articles, and the transcripts of broadcast segments on the need for and rediscovery of unstructured play that appeared between January 1, 2005 and December 31, 2010. This time frame was selected to coincide with the recent revival of interest in play, both among scholars and the public. The eight frames that emerged from the coverage reveal that the spontaneity in play valued by children and endorsed by scholars is absent from recent descriptions by journalists of play. Journalists did not frame play as a respite for children from daily life, or an “interlude” ( Huizinga, 1971, p. 21 ) undertaken to escape the real world. Play as portrayed through these frames must be productive – a “useful pastime” ( Chudacoff, 2007, p. 222 ). Descriptions of play by journalists support the “rhetoric of progress” discussed by Sutton-Smith. Play is seen as the “optimal state of being for children” ( Gentry, 2009, p. 14A ), rather than something a child simply wants to do for fun. Few of the sources consulted by journalists favor letting kids go off in an unsupervised fashion. Kids can play, but only if they do so in clearly defined spaces and according to clearly laid out schedules.
