Methods and apparatus for the recording and playback of animation control signals, including voice, are disclosed. In accordance with the method, a dual track cassette recording is made, one track consisting of a voice channel and the other track consisting of a plurality of control signals for the control of animation, and in some instances for control of the speaker or speakers through which the voice channel will be played back, whereby two or more animated characters may appear to speak to each other or speak or sing in unison are disclosed. The control signals are pulse width modulated signals to provide, in general, proportional control signals to provide proportional control, through appropriate servo motors and the like, of the animated elements such as mouth, eyes, etc. of the animated character. The pulse width modulated signals, together with a sync signal, are recorded directly on a cassette tape without modulation on a carrier frequency, despite the varying unsymmetrical wave forms, thereby allowing the compaction of a substantial number of control signals within the frequency band of reasonably priced playback units.

Method and apparatus for the recording and playback of animation control signals

An animated display in the form of a representation of a face, is controlled by an associated audio tape player and a microprocessor-controlled liquid crystal display. The facial features are variable responsively to the audio signals of the tape player as controlled by the microprocessor.

Animated display controlled by an audio device

A character animation method and apparatus for the animation of toy characters and the like is disclosed. In accordance with the method, a voice track is recorded on one track of a dual track recording device, typically a tape recorder. On a second track of the recorder an animation signal is recorded characterized by the signal having a frequency at any given time indicative of the then currently desired animation condition. A character is provided having a tape playback unit therein for playing back such prerecorded dual track tapes, the character having an amplifier and speaker for reproducing the audio information, and a servo motor (24) having a drive system for driving the character mouth elements (52, 54) and eyes (46) with the desired animation, the drive system having a feedback device thereon for providing a feedback signal to the servo motor control. The electronics in the character which is responsive to the animation control signal provided by the playback unit to provide the servo motor drive signal effectively updates the servo motor drive signal on each cycle of the animation control signal received from the playback unit.

Character animation method and apparatus

An animated telephone annunicator apparatus provides realistic movements so that a user of the apparatus appears to converse with the apparatus. The apparatus receives telephone signals, and in response to these received signals moves portions of the apparatus in synchronism with the signals. As a result, the apparatus appears to realistically speak the words of a calling party.

Animated annunciator apparatus

An expression-varying device is disclosed. The device includes a supporting member that supports two eyeball bodies so that the eyeball bodies are free to pivot. The device also includes a connecting member that connects the two eyeball bodies, and that supports the eyeball bodies so that the eyeball bodies can pivot in synchronization in a side to side or left to right direction. The device includes a swinging mechanism that causes the connecting member to swing upward and downward and to the left and right. The swinging mechanism includes a disk in which a recessed groove is formed in a side surface of the disk and runs in a circumferential direction. The depth of the groove and distance of the groove from the center of the disk vary according to relative positions on the disk. The swinging mechanism includes a motor that causes the disk to rotate. An engaging shaft which engages with the recessed groove of the disk is formed on and protrudes from and to the side of the arm member. The arm member is driven by a driving member so that the tip end of the engaging shaft constantly contacts the bottom part of the recessed groove. The tip end of the arm member is caused to swing upward and downward and to the left and right in linkage with the recessed groove of the disk. Accordingly, the connecting member is caused to swing upward and downward and to the left and right, thus causing the two eyeball bodies to pivot so that various expressions are displayed.

Expression-varying device

Puppet-like apparatus includes a manikin head having a face with a hinged jaw. A drive motor is connected to the jaw to reciprocate it. Within the head are a radio receiver having a level detector which responds to the audio peaks to actuate the drive motor in forward and reverse directions to open and close the jaw thereby simulating speech. In addition, an exterior microphone is provided for speech input.
