An improved method of performing surgery on a joint in a patient's body, such as a knee, includes making an incision in a knee portion of one leg while a lower portion of the one leg is extending downward from an upper portion of the one leg and while a foot connected with the lower portion of the one leg is below a support surface on which the patient is disposed. The incision is relatively short, for example, between seven and thirteen centimeters. A patella may be offset from its normal position with an inner side of the patella facing inward during cutting of a bone with a cutting tool. During cutting of the bone, one or more guide members having opposite ends which are spaced apart by a distance less than the width of an implant may be utilized to guide movement of a cutting tool.

Movable knee implant and methods therefor

Light from an image displayed on a display screen (10) is transmitted to an observer's eye (11) by way of a dynamic optical element (12) (such as a spatial light modulator or an electrically switchable holographic composite) which acts as a lens. Emitters (17) on the display screen (10) emit infrared radiation which is projected by the dynamic lens (12) as a broad wash onto the eye (11). Infrared radiation reflected back from the eye (11) is focused by the dynamic lens (12) onto detectors (18) also provided on the display screen (10). The detectors (18) are thus able to sense the direction of eye gaze, and the dynamic lens (12) is controlled in dependence on this to create an area of high resolution in an area of interest centred on the direction of gaze, which is moved to follow the eye gaze as its direction alters. Other than in the area of interest, the dynamic lens (12) has a relatively low resolution.

Instrumentation for minimally invasive joint replacement and methods for using same

Apparatus, system, and method is described wherein a synthetic aperture based sequence of image samples are generated with respect to a subject to be stereoscopically imaged. These sample images are presented to the spaced inputs of a holographic integrated combiner screen to be presented at an output aperture in laterally spaced mutual positioning. That spacing is selected, in one aspect, as one-half of the interpupillary distance of human eyes and thus binocular stereoscopic viewing at the aperture is achieved. The combiner screen may be utilized in conjunction with a holographic optical image combiner architecture which additionally employs a lens assembly such as a projecting lens to generate multi-zone outputs, each zone of which may be presented for stereoscopic viewing at a discrete viewing station. Correction for chromatic aberration of the holographic optical components is described.

Synthetic aperture based real time holographic imaging

A spatial light modulator with application to holography utilizes two planar transparent supports between which is positioned an electro-optical dipolar medium which is normally opaque but light transmissive in the presence of an applied electric field. Orthogonally disposed arrays of transparent electrodes are supported from the transparent supports and are arranged to be sequentially scanned in sampling fashion to define a sequence of uniform electric fields forming apertures of predetermined diameter. For holographic applications, one of the surfaces of the supports receives the interference pattern generated by the reference and object illumination emanating from a coherent source and the opposite support is operatively associated with a photodetecting arrangement. Through the generation of scanning synchronization signals and data signals from the photodetectors, an electronic representation of holographic data is achieved. To avoid "cross-talk" phenomena and segmented aperture definition, the assemblage includes metallic layers adjacent each of the electrode arrays having openings therein at matrix locations where the oppositely disposed electrodes cross. The metallic layers are mutually electrically coupled and serve to dissipate otherwise laterally extending field flux regions. To reconstruct these data, the same form of support and normally opaque dipolar medium is employed in conjunction with a control scanning arrangement wherein electrical fields corresponding with interference pattern intensity are provided. This arrangement may be utilized in conjunction with a reference beam of coherent light to derive a virtual image corresponding with the initially constructed holographic data. To achieve an adequate dwell interval for the reconstructed hologram for each displaced field, a latching transparent electrode layer is provided adjacent each array which is energized to produce a field therebetween having a strength below that required to initially induce a transparent condition but sufficient to maintain such condition for any pre-existing aperture. Frame rates are enhanced through register application of data signals to one entire array of electrodes while providing application to a single electrode of the oppositely disposed array.

Spatial light modulation with application to electronically generated holography

A free space imaging system utilizing a doublet form of optic. The doublet is configured with two large Fresnel lenses configured such that their echelon groove components are mutually oppositely disposed within the optical path of the system. The method includes an arrangement wherein the output focal plane deliberately is curved and generated with a relatively wide field of view to evoke an emulation of three-dimensionality.
