TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the reasons behind large differences in regional growth performance for the period from the start of transition to the 1998 crisis, using a panel of 77 Russian regions, and found no evidence that a region's economic performance has been influenced by the political orientation of its leaders or the political preferences of the population.

What Makes Cities More Productive? Evidence on the Role of Urban Governance from Five OECD Countries

TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyzed the relationship between cities' governmental fragmentation and productivity, and presented the first empirical analysis of how metropolitan governance structures affect this relationship, finding that cities with fragmented governance structures tend to have lower levels of productivity.
