The Internet of Things (IoT) has rapidly expanded for a wide range of applications towards a smart future world by connecting everything. As a result, new challenges emerge in meeting the requirements of IoT applications while retaining optimal performance. These challenges may include power consumption, quality of service, localization, security, and accurate modeling and characterization of wireless channel propagation. Among these challenges, the latter is critical to establishing point-to-point wireless communication between the sensors. Channel modeling also varies depending on the features of the surrounding area, which have a direct impact on the propagation of wireless signals. This presents a difficult task for network planners to efficiently design and deploy IoT applications without understanding the appropriate channel model to analyze coverage and predict optimal deployment configurations. As a result, this challenge has attracted considerable interest in academic and industrial communities in recent years. Therefore, this review presents an overview of current breakthroughs in wireless IoT technologies. The challenges in such applications are then briefly reviewed, focusing on wireless channel propagation modeling and characterization. Finally, the study gives a generalized form of commonly used channel models and a summary of recent channel modeling developments for wireless IoT technology. The outcome of this review is expected to provide a new understanding of the propagation behavior of present and future wireless IoT technologies, allowing network engineers to undertake correct planning and deployment in any environment. Additionally, the study may serve as a guideline for future channel modeling and characterization studies. 

Wireless Transmissions, Propagation and Channel Modelling for IoT Technologies: Applications and Challenges

Hybrid beamforming is an attractive solution to build cost-effective and energy-efficient transceivers for millimeter-wave and terahertz systems. However, conventional hybrid beamforming techniques rely on analog components that generate a frequency flat response such as phase-shifters and switches, which limits the flexibility of the achievable beam patterns. As a novel alternative, this paper proposes a new class of hybrid beamforming called Joint phase-time arrays (JPTA), that additionally use true-time delay elements in the analog beamforming to create frequency-dependent analog beams. Using as an example two important frequency-dependent beam behaviors, the numerous benefits of such flexibility are exemplified. Subsequently, the JPTA beamformer design problem to generate any desired beam behavior is formulated and near-optimal algorithms to the problem are proposed. Simulations show that the proposed algorithms can outperform heuristics solutions for JPTA beamformer update. Furthermore, it is shown that JPTA can achieve the two exemplified beam behaviors with one radio-frequency chain, while conventional hybrid beamforming requires the radio-frequency chains to scale with the number of antennas to achieve similar performance. Finally, a wide range of problems to further tap into the potential of JPTA are also listed as future directions.

Joint Phase-Time Arrays: A Paradigm for Frequency-Dependent Analog Beamforming in 6G

Future wireless networks may operate at millimeter-wave (mmW) and sub-terahertz (sub-THz) frequencies to enable high data rate requirements. While large antenna arrays are critical for reliable communications at mmW and sub-THz bands, these antenna arrays would also mandate efficient and scalable initial beam alignment and link maintenance algorithms for mobile devices. Low-power phased-array architectures and phaseless power measurements due to high frequency oscillator phase noise pose additional challenges for practical beam tracking algorithms. Traditional beam tracking protocols require exhaustive sweeps of all possible beam directions and scale poorly with high mobility and large arrays. Compressive sensing and machine learning designs have been proposed to improve measurement scaling with array size but commonly degrade under hardware impairments or require raw samples respectively. In this work, we introduce a novel long short-term memory (LSTM) network assisted beam tracking and prediction algorithm utilizing only phase-less measurements from fixed compressive codebooks. We demonstrate comparable beam alignment accuracy to state-of-the-art phase-less beam alignment algorithms, while reducing the average number of required measurements over time.

Machine Learning Prediction for Phase-less Millimeter-Wave Beam Tracking

Abstract The field of sub-terahertz wireless communications is advancing rapidly, with major research efforts ramping up around the globe. To address some of the significant hurdles associated with exploiting these high frequencies for broadband and secure networking, systems will require extensive new capabilities for sensing their environment and manipulating their broadcasts. Based on these requirements, a vision for future wireless systems is beginning to emerge. In this Perspective article, we discuss some of the prominent challenges and possible solutions which are at the forefront of current research, and which will contribute to the architecture of wireless platforms beyond 5G.

Wireless communications sensing and security above 100 GHz

The decadal research in integrated true-time-delay arrays have seen organic growth enabling realization of wideband beamformers for large arrays with wide aperture widths. This article introduces highly reconfigurable delay elements implementable at analog or digital baseband that enables multiple Spatial Signal Processing (SSP) functions including wideband beamforming, wideband interference cancellation, and fast beam training. Details of the beam-training algorithm, system design considerations, system architecture and circuits with large delay range-to-resolution ratios are presented leveraging integrated delay compensation techniques. The article lays out the framework for true-time-delay based arrays in next-generation network infrastructure supporting 3D beam training in planar arrays, low latency massive multiple access, and emerging wireless communications standards. 

Wideband Beamforming With Rainbow Beam Training Using Reconfigurable True-Time-Delay Arrays for Millimeter-Wave Wireless [Feature]

In this paper we propose a novel millimeter wave (mmW) multiple access method that exploits unique frequency dependent beamforming capabilities of True Time Delay (TTD) array architecture. The proposed protocol combines a contentionbased grant-free access and orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) scheme for uplink machine type communications. By exploiting abundant time-frequency resource blocks in mmW spectrum, we design a simple protocol that can achieve low collision rate and high network reliability for short packets and sporadic transmissions. We analyze the impact of various system parameters on system performance during synchronization and contention period. We exploit unique advantages of frequency dependent beamforming, referred as rainbow beam, to eliminate beam training overhead and analyze its impact on rates, latency, and coverage. The proposed system and protocol can flexibly accommodate different low latency applications with moderate rate requirements for a very large number of narrowband single antenna devices. By harnessing abundant resources in mmW spectrum and beamforming gain of TTD arrays rainbow link based system can simultaneously satisfy ultra-reliability and massive multiple access requirements.

Communication systems at millimeter-wave (mmW) and sub-terahertz frequencies are of increasing interest for future high-data rate networks. One critical challenge faced by phased array systems at these high frequencies is the efficiency of the initial beam alignment, typically using only phase-less power measurements due to high frequency oscillator phase noise. Traditional methods for beam alignment require exhaustive sweeps of all possible beam directions, thus scale communications overhead linearly with antenna array size. For better scaling with the large arrays required at high mmW bands, compressive sensing methods have been proposed as their overhead scales logarithmically with the array size. However, algorithms utilizing machine learning have shown more efficient and more accurate alignment when using real hardware due to array impairments. Additionally, few existing phase-less beam alignment algorithms have been tested over varied secondary path strength in multipath channels. In this work, we introduce a novel, machine learning based algorithm for beam alignment in multipath environments using only phase-less received power measurements. We consider the impacts of phased array sounding beam design and machine learning architectures on beam alignment performance and validate our findings experimentally using 60 GHz radios with 36-element phased arrays. Using experimental data in multipath channels, our proposed algorithm demonstrates an 88\% reduction in beam alignment overhead compared to an exhaustive search and at least a 62\% reduction in overhead compared to existing compressive methods.
