A system and method for variable power transfer in an inductive charging or power system. In accordance with an embodiment the system comprises a pad or similar base unit that contains a primary, which creates an alternating magnetic field. A receiver comprises a means for receiving the energy from the alternating magnetic field from the pad and transferring it to a mobile device, battery, or other device. In accordance with various embodiments, additional features can be incorporated into the system to provide greater power transfer efficiency, and to allow the system to be easily modified for applications that have different power requirements. These include variations in the material used to manufacture the primary and/or the receiver coils; modified circuit designs to be used on the primary and/or receiver side; and additional circuits and components that perform specialized tasks, such as mobile device or battery identification, and automatic voltage or power-setting for different devices or batteries.

A portable inductive power source, power device, or unit, for use in powering or charging electrical, electronic, battery-operated, mobile, and other devices is disclosed herein. System and methods for inductive charging, and improvements and uses thereof

A battery charging system (250) for use with an induction charger (210). The battery charging system can include a secondary coil (252) having a plurality of turns for receiving magnetic flux produced by a primary coil (220) of the induction charger, and a control circuit (254) for controlling a number of turns of the secondary coil that are used in generating an output voltage for charging a cell (264). For example, the secondary coil can include a plurality of taps (291, 292, 293, 294), each of the taps providing an electrical connection to the coil at a different point, and thus providing a variety of selectable output voltages.

Method and system for providing induction charging having improved efficiency

A wireless communication device (50) can include a radio frequency transceiver (52), an audio drive circuit (58) coupled to the transceiver, a speaker (10) having a voice coil (16) coupled to the audio drive circuit, and an antenna feed or radiating circuit (20) such as an RFID or NFID circuit coupled to the voice coil for at least radiating or receiving an electromagnetic signal via the voice coil. Such radiating circuits can be coupled to the voice coil using a band pass circuit designed to substantially prevent a radiating signal from the radiating circuit from interfering with audio drive circuit driving the speaker. The wireless communication device can further include an antenna (54) coupled to the radio frequency transceiver. Note, this arrangement can be designed to avoid problems involving electrostatic discharge sensitivity, electromagnetic interference coupling between the antenna and the voice coil, total radiated power, and specific absorption rate.

A system (200) includes a battery charger (278) and a battery (202). The battery (202) includes a thermistor (230), a voltage identifying element (240), a switch (244), a memory device (232), and a battery data contact (228), connected to a data port of the memory device (232) and the voltage identifying element (240). The voltage identifying element (240) determines a voltage that controls the switch (244). When the switch (244) is enabled, the thermistor (230), connected to a battery clock contact (224), is active and a microprocessor (102) on the battery charger (278) reads the value of the thermistor (230) via an analog-to-digital converter. When the switch (244) is disabled, the thermistor (230) is switched out and the battery clock contact (224) is used to clock the memory device (232). The battery charger (278) has a data contact (226) for receiving the battery data contact (228) and a clock contact (222) for receiving the battery clock contact (224). The battery charger (278) further includes at least two switches (204,206), and the microprocessor (102) is programmed to selectively operate the switches (204,206).
