A system and related methods of correcting errors during check or financial document processing by a bank of first deposit or other entity receiving a paper check or financial document, or by a second bank on whose accounts the checks were written. These corrections can be performed by the computer system of the bank of first deposit, the computer system of the second bank, or both. A method of processing paper checks that divides into two independent paths the processing of a data file representing a check and the digital image of the check. The data files and image files are separated both in time and in space, with the data files being used to promptly initiate the transfer of funds to and from appropriate accounts, while the paper checks, at a remote location and typically lagging in time, are scanned to create digital image files and deposited as an image or substitute check if deemed ACH ineligible. The method provides for the comparison of data files to image files, based on MICR information, to find any unmatching or mismatched items for exception processing and a process to manage ACH-ineligible items as an image or substitute check. A process for translating raw MICR data to a desired format, and for identifying the proper translation to be applied, is described.

System and method for processing checks and check transactions

A method including a process by which a first digital image of the document is obtained. A second digital image of a document is retrieved from a computer, a mobile device, a computer network or by imaging of a second document. The method includes calculating the transformation between the first and second digital images such as geometrical distortion, local ‘brightness and contrast differences and blurring due to the optical imaging process. The method estimates the parameters of these transformations so that the transformations can be applied to one of the images, rendering it as similar as possible to the other image. The method further compares the two images in order to find differences such as addition, deletion or changing of characters or words. The method further displays the differences on a display such as a computer screen or mobile device screen or reports to the user that the two documents are identical.

A method for enhancing the accuracy of Optical Character Recognition (OCR) algorithms by detection of differences between a digital image of a document and a text file corresponding to the digital image, created by the OCR algorithm. The method estimates the parameters of these transformations so that the transformations can be applied to at least one of the images, rendering it as similar as possible to the other image. The analysis results are fed back to the OCR algorithm.

Document comparison and analysis for improved OCR

System and method for exception processing of MICR documents. MICR documents are read and sorted to a destination pocket for processing subject to a determination that an exception does not prevent the routing of the document. In example embodiments, for example, an error does not prevent the routing of the document if it is not related to the routing/transit field. In the case of digit errors, an optical character recognition (OCR) process (300, 414) is performed on the stored, electronic image of the document to correct digit errors in the stored data read from the documents. If a determination is made that correction or other exception processing cannot be handled through the OCR process, the image and corresponding MICR data is displayed on a user terminal (528), for manual verification or correction by reference to an image of the document, rather than the document itself.
