In this paper, a novel evolutionary algorithm-based approach to optimal design of multimachine power system stabilizers (PSSs) is proposed. The proposed approach employs the particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique to search for optimal settings of PSS parameters. Two elgenvalue-based objective functions to enhance system damping of electromechanical modes are considered. The robustness of the proposed approach to the initial guess is demonstrated. The performance of the proposed PSO-based PSS (PSOPSS) under different disturbances, loading conditions, and system configurations is tested and examined for different multimachine power systems. Eigenvalue analysis and nonlinear simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed PSOPSSs to damp out the local as well as the interarea modes of oscillations and work effectively over a wide range of loading conditions and system configurations. In addition, the potential and superiority of the proposed approach over the conventional approaches are demonstrated.

Optimal des'ign of Power System Stabilizers Using Particle Swarm Opt'imization

Efficient algorithms are presented for the solution of two important problems in the area of damping control of electromechanical oscillations in large-scale systems. The proposed algorithms allow the determination of: the most suitable generators for installing power system stabilizers; the most suitable buses in the system for placing static VAr compensators in order to damp the critical modes of oscillation. These algorithms involve the calculation of transfer function residues and represent an important extension of the powerful methodology described by V. Arcidiaconos et al. (see IEEE Trans. Power Apparatus and Systems, vol.PAS-99, p.769-78, 1980), whose use was up to now restricted to power systems of limited size. Determination of suitable locations for power system stabilizers and static VAr compensators for damping electromechanical oscillations in large scale power systems

Multi-machine power system stabilizer design by rule based bacteria foraging

Damping intra-area and interarea oscillations are critical to optimal power flow and stability in a power system. Power system stabilizers (PSSs) are effective damping devices, as they provide auxiliary control signals to the excitation systems of generators. The proper selection of PSS parameters to accommodate variations in the power system dynamics is important and is a challenging task particularly when several PSSs are involved. Two classical bio-inspired algorithms, which are small-population-based particle swarm optimization (SPPSO) and bacterial foraging algorithm (BFA), are presented in this paper for the simultaneous design of multiple optimal PSSs in two power systems. A classical PSO with a small population of particles is called SPPSO in this paper. The SPPSO uses the regeneration concept, introduced in this paper, to attain the same performance as a PSO algorithm with a large population. Both algorithms use time domain information to obtain the objective function for the determination of the optimal parameters of the PSSs. The effectiveness of the two algorithms is evaluated and compared for damping the system oscillations during small and large disturbances, and their robustness is illustrated using the transient energy analysis. In addition, the computational complexities of the two algorithms are also presented.

Bio-inspired Algorithms for the Design of Multiple Optimal Power System Stabilizers: SPPSO and BFA

In this paper, the problem of simultaneous and coordinated tuning of brushless exciter and lead-lag power system stabilizer parameters of a single infinite bus power system is considered. This problem is formulated as an optimization problem, which is solved using particle swarm optimization technique. Also in this paper, the optimal tuning of a fuzzy logic power system stabilizer using particle swarm optimization method is carried out. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed particle swarm optimization-based lead-lag power system stabilizer and particle swarm optimization-based fuzzy logic power system stabilizer to damp the oscillation of multimachine system and work effectively under variable loading and fault conditions.

Optimal tunning of lead-lag and fuzzy logic power system stabilizers using particle swarm optimization

A simple synthesis method of a power system stabilizer (PSS) was developed by combining the frequency response method and the pole assignment method. This method enables synthesis in a multimachine system and is easily incorporated into an eigenvalue program for the power system. Although there are limitations of the model accuracy, the damper winding, the governor system and the load characteristics can be considered in the synthesis.

Fast Transient Stability Solution Using An Array Processor

A practical method for deriving operational impedances from on load tests is proposed. This method differs from well-known frequency response methods from stator or rotor circuit [3-5]. The operational impedances are calculated from the data of small perturbations of the generator voltage, current and rotor angle during system disturbances using Laplace transforms. They include the saturation effect and are suited for dynamic stability studies.
