The IEEE Simplified Method [33] for computing lightning performance of overhead transmission lines was first described by Anderson [5]. Since its publication, considerable experience has been obtained in the application of the method and in the testing of various component models. This paper describes application experience, sets out the theoretical basis for modifications and provides a framework for future advancements

IEEE working group report. Estimating lightning performance of transmission lines. II: Updates to analytical models

Generalized curves for estimating lightning performance of ehv lines are presented. The curves are based on typical vertical and horizontal configurations for voltages ranging from 115 to 700 kV, covering the practical range of insulators, spans and footing resistances. The combination of insulators and footing resistances for the desired performance can be determined from the curves. Examples are given to illustrate the use of the curves in designing lines.
