This paper reviews virtual storage and virtual machine concepts, consolidating and updating earlier discussions. The manner in which actual virtual storage and machine systems have been implemented, and certain problems of current implementations, are described. To better illustrate the material, the virtual machine system CP-67 for the IBM System/360 Model 67 is considered at some length. An annotated bibliography is included.

Virtual storage and virtual machine concepts

One of the major concerns of users of virtual storage systems has also been a major objective of system designers, that is, ease of moving programs for OS/MFT systems to OS/VS1 systems. Discussed in this article have been supervisor and job scheduling operations that make such a move possible, whereby programs remain wholly or largely intact. The major innovation of virtual storage systems is that of dynamic relocation. Effects of dynamic job relocation on the supervisor and the job scheduler have been discussed.

OS/VS1 concepts and philosophies

This paper examines the consequences of replicating simulation experiments using complementary uniform streams toi generate stochastic variates. We show that the success of any application of the method of antithetic variate is greatly influenced by the generator used.

Im vorliegenden Beitrag wurde der Versuch unternommen, Rechnersysteme mit Multiprogramming und Paging einschlieslich der auf ihnen ablaufenden Programme durch Modelle zu beschreiben. Aufbauend auf Modellkriterien fur Rechnersysteme mit einer zweistufigen Speicherhierarchie, fur Programmverhalten und Betriebssystemstrategien wurde ein verfeinertes Modell entwickelt und mit Hilfe der Simulation untersucht. Ausserdem wurde eine mathematische Analyse fur vereinfachte Warteschlangenmodelle vorgenommen. Die Ergebnisse zeigen den prinzipiellen Einflus der einzelnen Modellparameter auf die Leistungsfahigkeit derartiger Rechnersysteme. Der Vergleich zwischen Simulation und Rechnung ergibt, das die prinzipiellen Charakteristika wie Auslastungen, Durchsatz und Durchlaufzeiten relativ genau mit Hilfe von Warteschlangenmodellen abgeschatzt werden konnen. Genauere Aufschlusse z.B. uber die Einflusse des Lokalitatsverhaltens von Programmen sowie der Ersetzungs-strategien im Zusammenspiel mit den anderen Systemkomponenten konnen jedoch nur mit Hilfe der Simulation gewonnen werden.

Update methods for reduction of computing time in simulation studies

Explored by simulation is the performance of a probabilistic model of a multiprogrammed single-processor computing system operating under demand paging.

Results of experiments on statistical methods for improving the efficiency of the simulation are presented.

Estimates of the response variables in the simulation are reported for a variety of conditions of system overhead, queuing delays, and transient response. Sensitivity of these factors to the assumptions of the model are discussed.
