Modified binders exhibit complex rheological behaviour due to the interaction of the modifiers with the base binder and the manner in which they age during field applications. Quantification of the interaction and the ageing of such modified binders is currently a necessity. In this investigation, three modified binders (elastomer, plastomer, and crumb rubber) and the base bitumen were subjected to different ageing conditions and the evolution of the chemical functionalities during ageing were tracked using FTIR spectroscopy. Analysis of the spectra of modified binders immediately after the production process showed that while the elastomer modified binders exhibited physical interaction, the plastomer and crumb rubber modified binders exhibited physical and chemical interactions. During ageing, there was no subsequent evolution of the interactions and one could only see chemical functionalities related to oxidation. Cracking in asphalt mixes is highly influenced by binder properties. Current specifications for low temperature cracking resistance are based on empirical tests or tests involving linear viscoelasticity. Although these standard characteristics may work for conventional binders, they cannot be applied on all asphalts. Using the three points bending test (TPBT) on pre-notched asphalt beams appears to be a solution in that context. This paper presents a comparison between low temperature properties, obtained from Bending Beam Rheometer (BBR), complex modulus, TPBT and Fraass tests. Eight asphalt binders and the resulting ones from aging process were studied. The results showed that BBR and complex modulus give similar information about low temperature binder?s linear viscoelasticity (strongly correlated limiting temperatures obtained using both methods). Fracture and linear viscoelastic properties rank asphalt binders differently, although they may present some correlation. Intermediate coefficients of determination between limiting temperatures obtained using both criteria lead to the conclusion that linear viscoelasticity aspects are not the only variables controlling cracking behaviour. Indeed, they play an important role in crack initiation and growth increasing or decreasing stresses, but they do not determine fracture properties. Other phenomena linked to the microstructure behaviour under high strain are involved in the cracking process.

Relationships between low temperatureproperties of asphalt binders

La fissuration d'un enrobe bitumineux s'effectue, dans la plupart des cas, au sein du liant bitumineux. Actuellement, les specifications sur la determination de la resistance a la fissuration a basse temperature des liants bitumineux sont fondes sur des essais empiriques ou sur des tests faisant intervenir la theorie de la viscoelasticite lineaire (essai FRAASS, fluage, module complexe). Or, si ces caracteristiques usuelles peuvent fonctionner pour les bitumes purs, elles ne permettent pas d'etre appliquees a l'ensemble des bitumes. L'utilisation de l'essai de rupture flexion trois points sur barreau entaille de bitume semble prometteuse pour etre applique a tous les bitumes.
