Identifying Early Indicators of Manageable Rework Causes and Selecting Mitigating Best Practices for Construction

Selecting the appropriate project delivery method (PDM) is a very significant managerial decision that impacts the success of construction projects. This paper provides a critical review of related literature on the evolution of project delivery methods, selection methods and selection criteria over the years and their suitability in the construction industry of today’s world. The literature review analysis has concluded that project delivery methods evolve at a slower rate compared to the evolution of the construction industry. The paper also suggests features of an evolved project delivery method that is digitally integrated, people-centered, and sustainability-focused. Moreover, the paper highlights the latest selection criteria such as risk, health and wellbeing, sustainability goals and technological innovations. Furthermore, the paper concluded that advanced artificial intelligence techniques are yet to be exploited to develop a smart decision support model that will assist clients in selecting the most appropriate delivery method for successful project completion. Additionally, the paper presents a framework that illustrates the relationship between the different PDM variables needed to harmonize with the construction industry. Last, but not least, the paper fills a gap in the literature as it covers a different perspective in the field of project delivery methods. The paper also provides recommendations and future research ideas.

Critical Review of the Evolution of Project Delivery Methods in the Construction Industry

This study sought to delineate SCM features using the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) with a view to incorporating it into the delivery of construction projects in Nigeria. The study adopted an exploratory research design (quantitative and qualitative) methods. A purposive and convenient sampling technique was deployed with the aid of semi-structured interview, case study; questionnaire survey in a construction firm in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. Questionnaires were used to collect primary data after being pre-tested via a pilot study for validity and reliability. The data collected were analysed using the AHP. Findings from the study shows that the following features are key; Instituting trust and long term relationships amongst supply chain partners (ITP), supply chain finance (SCF), supply chain and continuous performance measurement (SCCPM), information technology (IT), quality management (QM), supply base management (SBM), senior management’s commitment (SMC) and supply chain orientation (SCO). In delivering construction projects to success using the SCM approach, adequate attention and emphasis should be accorded to the aforementioned important features in the order they appear as they would aid in effecting the much needed success. It is also expected that the features would further be beneficial to construction firms as it would enable the firms to manage, measure and evaluate the gains ensuing from the deployment of SCM techniques.

Delineating Supply Chain Management (SCM) Features in Construction Project Delivery: The Nigerian Case

Results: Results indicated that the level of awareness and implementation of value management varies from region to region and country to country. Some implementation barriers include lack of knowledge and awareness, no standard method of problem-solving, lack of value management practices by contractors, the concept is new in many regions, contractors not willing to implement VM fully during projects, and lack of qualified personnel to adopt VM. From this review, some of the benefits of adopting VM include maximizing productivity, better sustainability, and expected targets achieved within a reasonable time.

Value Management Practices in Construction Industry: An Analytical Review

Success in infrastructure projects requires success in all phases of the project, including design, construction, and operation. One of the necessary actions for developing countries to construct their economic infrastructures, is implementing infrastructure plans. This industry should focus more on the construction process and utilizing creative tools and new concepts for construction development. The reason of it is because of delivering the project with certain quality, in time and with the given budget. Contractors should have new strategies for construction to optimize project completion, and constructability. Accordingly, constructability improvements have become the concern of construction industry practitioners. Considering constructability issues in the early stages of the project enhances identifying design limitations that prevent capabilities of contractors to take part in planning and improving project performance. The purpose of this study is identifying the prerequisites of constructability to resolve the current problems of projects, including inappropriate plans without implementability, poor decision making in design, and lack of sufficient implementation experience in the design engineering team. This study provides a list of prerequisites for constructability implementation in infrastructure projects. Accordingly, it identifies the prerequisites, using Systematic Literature Review (SLR) technique. The NVivo software is used to facilitate the qualitative analyses.

A Systematic Review of Prerequisites for Constructability Implementation in Infrastructure Projects

As projects are getting complex by the day and for the fact that project failures – project abandonment, collapsed structures are constant discourse in the Nigerian news media, the need for constructability becomes very crucial in order to achieve project success. This study is aimed at investigating and analyzing the implementation of constructability in project delivery process in the Nigerian construction industry using Rivers State, Nigeria as a case study. Data was collected through questionnaire and interview approach. Results of data analyzed revealed that although a high percentage of the sampled population are familiar with the term “constructability”, nearly all do not have corporate constructability implementation manual nor apply formal constructability implementation programs and techniques as obtained in more developed countries. Constructability implementation is therefore neither systematic nor comprehensive in virtually all the firms surveyed. The universal principles of constructability were accepted by the professionals and rated in the order of importance. The most critical was identified as the carrying out of thorough investigation of site and development of a project plan. Conditions that constrain constructability in the opinion of the professionals were also identified and rated in the order of impact. Spearman rank correlation analysis revealed an agreement of opinion between different respondent groups in the sampled population. Engineers, project managers and other industry practitioners are enjoined to adopt these principles in their planning, design and construction activities in order to improve the overall project performance and achieve best practices in the industry.

Constructability practice and project delivery processes in the nigerian construction industry

The study appraises the features in the South African construction projects supply chain that are amenable to blockchain technology. An integrative review of purposively sampled extant literature from multidisciplinary databases: Web of Science, Science Direct, Scopus, Sage, Taylor and Francis, and Emerald Insight were adopted. Descriptors for literature search are “integrative review”, “black economic empowerment”, “building information modelling”, and “blockchain technology application in the South African construction sector”. The study is in a bid to determine the South African story regarding the adaptability of her infrastructure supply chain using blockchain technology. The study establishes the need for a paradigm shift where figments of science have become reality, and technology synthesis is the main driver. Thus, guaranteeing that technology preference is ideal and to the benefit of everyone. Results show that South Africa is willing to try new technologies including blockchain technology however; there is need for the human workforce and stakeholders within the construction sector to be trained to attain technical and personal skills capabilities. The study proposes the need to integrate blockchain technology concepts into the current education system, especially in developing countries.
