The use of flexures in the form of flat spiral springs cut from sheet metal materials provides support for coaxial nonrotating linear reciprocating members in power conversion machinery, such as Stirling cycle engines or heat pumps. They permit operation with little or no rubbing contact or other wear mechanisms. The relatively movable members include one member having a hollow interior structure within which the flexures are located. The flexures permit limited axial movement between the interconnected members, but prevent adverse rotational movement and radial displacement from their desired coaxial positions.

Flexure bearing support, with particular application to stirling machines

In one aspect the invention relates to an electrical circuit for use with a generator having an output port, the circuit to modify one of an electric current or voltage from the generator. The circuit includes a rectifier to convert the alternating current from the generator to direct current, the rectifier having a first port and a second port, the rectifier first port in communication with the output port of the generator; and a direct current to alternating current inverter to convert the direct current from the rectifier to alternating current, the inverter having a first port and a second port, the first port of the inverter in communication with the second port of the rectifier. In one embodiment, the generator is a linear alternator positioned within an energy converting apparatus comprising a Stirling engine having a piston such that motion of the piston drives the linear alternator.

Apparatus, Systems, and Methods for Controlling Energy Converting Devices

A heating and cooling machine, operating according to a regenerative gas cycle process with a working medium, has a pressure-tight housing and a heat source connected inside the housing. Two linearly moveable pistons are positioned inside the housing. The two pistons delimit therebetween a warm working volume and are driveable by a control unit. The first piston together with the housing delimits a hot working volume loaded with heat from the heat source. The second piston together with the housing delimits a cold working volume. Regenerators as well as a warm heat transfer element and a cold heat transfer element are positioned in the housing. The three working volumes communicate with one another through the regenerators and the warm and cold heat transfer elements. A partition for transmitting heat energy generated by the heat source to the hot working volume, has the shape of a radially symmetrical dome and is connected to the housing so as to be heat-insulated relative to the housing.

Heating and cooling machine

Systems, methods, and apparatus relating to the use of Stirling engine technology to convert heat, such as from solar radiation, to mechanical work or electricity. Apparatus, systems, components, and methods relating to energy converting apparatus are described herein. In one aspect, the invention relates to the field alignment of panels and the assembly of a concentrator. In another aspect, a passive balancer is used in combination with a ring frame and other moving masses to reduce engine forces and vibration on the structure of the energy converting apparatus while maintaining properly constrained alignment of various suspended masses. In yet another aspect, the invention relates to various over-insolation control and management strategy to prevent overheating of the energy converting apparatus or components and subsystems thereof.

Stirling engine systems, apparatus and methods

An integrated sensor assembly (10) includes a gas compression unit (104) having a first longitudinal axis (308) and a gas expansion unit (112) having a second longitudinal axis (366) and the gas expansion unit is disposed with its second longitudinal axis orthogonal to the gas compression unit first longitudinal axis (308). A rotary motor (302) includes a rotor (324) supported for rotation with respect to a motor rotation axis (328) and the sensor assembly configuration is folded to orient the motor rotation axis substantially parallel with the second longitudinal axis (366). A motor shaft (320) extending from the rotor includes a first and second mounting features (336, 340) disposed substantially parallel with and radially offset from the motor rotation axis (328). A first drive coupling couples between the first mounting feature (336) and a gas compression piston (304) and drives the piston (304) with a reciprocal linear translation directed along the first longitudinal axis (308). A second drive coupling couples between the second mounting feature (340) and a gas displacing piston (362) and drives the piston (362) with a reciprocal linear translation directed along said second longitudinal axis (366).

Cooled infrared sensor assembly with compact configuration

A free piston Stirling cycle machine is illustrated by an engine that utilizes an axially movable displacer subjected to working gas pressures. A primary hydraulic circuit hydrostatically couples a displacer drive rod integral with the displacer to a counterbalance illustrated in the form of a scotch yoke. The counterbalance stabilizes and controls the Stirling cycle engine by constraining the displacer's reciprocating axial motion in a repetitive pattern. A throttling valve interposed in the primary hydraulic fluid circuit is used to adjustably resist displacer motion as required by engine operating conditions. A secondary hydraulic circuit is provided together with a bellows assembly between the working gas and power pistons to convert changes in working gas pressure to usable power output in the form of pumped hydraulic fluid.
