Turbulence, Coherent Structures, Dynamical Systems and Symmetry

Coherent structures in wall turbulence transport momentum and provide a means of producing turbulent kinetic energy. Above the viscous wall layer, the hairpin vortex paradigm of Theodorsen coupled with the quasistreamwise vortex paradigm have gained considerable support from multidimensional visualization using particle image velocimetry and direct numerical simulation experiments. Hairpins can autogenerate to form packets that populate a significant fraction of the boundary layer, even at very high Reynolds numbers. The dynamics of packet formation and the ramifications of organization of coherent structures (hairpins or packets) into larger-scale structures are discussed. Evidence for a large-scale mechanism in the outer layer suggests that further organization of packets may occur on scales equal to and larger than the boundary layer thickness.

Hairpin vortex organization in wall turbulencea)

Direct numerical simulations of unsteady channel flow were performed at low to moderate Reynolds numbers on computational boxes chosen small enough so that the flow consists of a doubly periodic (in x and z) array of identical structures. The goal is to isolate the basic flow unit, to study its morphology and dynamics, and to evaluate its contribution to turbulence in fully developed channels. For boxes wider than approximately 100 wall units in the spanwise direction, the flow is turbulent and the low-order turbulence statistics are in good agreement with experiments in the near-wall region. For a narrow range of widths below that threshold, the flow near only one wall remains turbulent, but its statistics are still in fairly good agreement with experimental data when scaled with the local wall stress. For narrower boxes only laminar solutions are found. In all cases, the elementary box contains a single low-velocity streak, consisting of a longitudinal strip on which a thin layer of spanwise vorticity is lifted away from the wall. A fundamental period of intermittency for the regeneration of turbulence is identified, and that process is observed to consist of the wrapping of the wall-layer vorticity around a single inclined longitudinal vortex.

The minimal flow unit in near-wall turbulence

Two-point statistics are presented for a new direct simulation of the zero-pressure-gradient turbulent boundary layer in the range Re θ = 2780–6680, and compared with channels in the same range of Reynolds numbers, δ+ ≈ 1000–2000. Three-dimensional spatial correlations are investigated in very long domains to educe the average structure of the velocity and pressure fluctuations. The streamwise velocity component is found to be coherent over longer distances in channels than in boundary layers, especially in the direction of the flow. For weakly correlated structures, the maximum streamwise length is O ( 7 δ ) for boundary layers and O ( 18 δ ) for channels, attained at the logarithmic and outer regions, respectively. The corresponding lengths for the spanwise and wall-normal velocities and for the pressure are shorter, O ( δ -2δ). The correlations are shown to be inclined to the wall at angles that depend on the distance from the wall, on the variable being considered, and on the correlation level used to define them. All these features change little between the two types of flows. Most the above features are also approximately independent of the Reynolds number, except for the pressure, and for the streamwise velocity structures in the channel. Further insight into the flow is provided by correlations conditioned on the intensity of the perturbations at the reference point, or on their sign. Two-point statistics for turbulent boundary layers and channels at Reynolds numbers up to δ + ≈ 2000

The linear growth of the spanwise correlation length scale with the distance from the wall in the logarithmic region of wall-bounded turbulent flows has been understood as a reflection of Townsend’s attached eddies. Based on this observation, in the present study, we perform a numerical experiment, which simulates energy-containing motions only at a given spanwise length scale in the logarithmic region, using their self-sustaining nature found recently. The self-sustaining energy-containing motions at each of the spanwise length scales are found to be self-similar with respect to the given spanwise length. Furthermore, their statistical structures are consistent with those of the attached eddies in the original theory, providing direct evidence on the existence of Townsend’s attached eddies. It is shown that a single self-sustaining attached eddy is composed of two distinct elements, one of which is a long streaky motion reaching the near-wall region, and the other is a relatively short vortical structure carrying all the velocity components. For the given spanwise length between and , where is half the height of the channel, the former is found to be self-similar along and , while the latter is self-similar along and where is the wall-normal direction. The scaling suggests that the smallest attached eddy would be a near-wall coherent motion in the form of a streak and quasi-streamwise vortices aligned to that, whereas the largest one would be an outer motion with a very-large-scale motion (VLSM) and large-scale motions (LSMs) aligned to that. The attached eddies in between, the size of which is proportional to their distance from the wall, contribute to the logarithmic region and fill the space caused by the length scale separation. The scaling is also found to yield behaviour consistent with the emergence of spectra in a number of previous studies. Finally, a further discussion is provided, in particular on Townsend’s inactive motion and several recent theoretical findings.

Statistical structure of self-sustaining attached eddies in turbulent channel flow

Topics presented include the similarity of organized structures in turbulent shear flows, a conceptual model of the viscous wall region, the effects of surface curvature on the law of the wall, and the role of inflectional velocity profiles in wall bounded flows. Also presented are a review of knowledge on pressure fluctuations, stochastic estimation of coherent structures in turbulent boundary layers, the effect of Reynolds number on the organized motion in a turbulent boundary layer, and the structure of turbulence in heat transfer. Also discussed are the effects of high free-stream turbulence on heat transfer in turbulent boundary layer, wave interaction and stability problems, the modeling of unsteady boundary layers, and the transport of enstrophy in a turbulent boundary layer.
