A centroidal Voronoi tessellation is a Voronoi tessellation whose generating points are the centroids (centers of mass) of the corresponding Voronoi regions. We give some applications of such tessellations to problems in image compression, quadrature, finite difference methods, distribution of resources, cellular biology, statistics, and the territorial behavior of animals. We discuss methods for computing these tessellations, provide some analyses concerning both the tessellations and the methods for their determination, and, finally, present the results of some numerical experiments.

This paper surveys current technology and research in the area of digital color imaging. In order to establish the background and lay down terminology, fundamental concepts of color perception and measurement are first presented using vector-space notation and terminology. Present-day color recording and reproduction systems are reviewed along with the common mathematical models used for representing these devices. Algorithms for processing color images for display and communication are surveyed, and a forecast of research trends is attempted. An extensive bibliography is provided.

Digital color imaging

Modeling and rendering of natural scenes with thousands of plants poses a number of problems. The terrain must be modeled and plants must be distributed throughout it in a realistic manner, reflecting the interactions of plants with each other and with their environment. Geometric models of individual plants, consistent with their positions within the ecosystem, must be synthesized to populate the scene. The scene, which may consist of billions of primitives, must be rendered efficiently while incorporating the subtleties of lighting in a natural environment. We have developed a system built around a pipeline of tools that address these tasks. The terrain is designed using an interactive graphical editor. Plant distribution is determined by hand (as one would do when designing a garden), by ecosystem simulation, or by a combination of both techniques. Given parametrized procedural models of individual plants, the geometric complexity of the scene is reduced by approximate instancing, in which similar plants, groups of plants, or plant organs are replaced by instances of representative objects before the scene is rendered. The paper includes examples of visually rich scenes synthesized using the system.

Realistic modeling and rendering of plant ecosystems

In this paper we consider thek-clustering problem for a set S of n points i=(xi) in thed-dimensional space with variance-based errors as clustering criteria, motivated from the color quantization problem of computing a color lookup table for frame buffer display. As the inter-cluster criterion to minimize, the sum on intra-cluster errors over every cluster is used, and as the intra-cluster criterion of a cluster Sj,|Sj|α-1 ΣpiϵSj || xi - x(Sj)||2is considered, where ||·|| is the L2 norm and x(Sj) is the centroid of points in Sj, i.e., (1/|Sj|)Σp ∈Sjxi. The cases of α=1,2 correspond to the sum of squared errors and the all-pairs sum of squared errors, respectively.The k-clustering problem under the criterion with α=1,2 are treated in a unified manner by characterizing the optimum solution to the kclustering problem by the ordinary Euclidean Voronoi diagram and the weighted Voronoi diagram with both multiplicative and additive weights. With this framework, the problem is related to the generalized primary shutter function for the Voronoi diagrams. The primary shutter function is shown to be O(nO(kd)), which implies that, for fixed k, this clustering problem can be solved in a polynomial time. For the problem with the most typical intra-cluster criterion of the sum of squared errors, we also present an efficient randomized algorithm which, roughly speaking, finds an ∈–approximate 2–clustering in O(n(1/∈)d) time, which is quite practical and may be used to real large-scale problems such as the color quantization problem.

Applications of weighted Voronoi diagrams and randomization to variance-based k-clustering: (extended abstract)

power of k-means algorithm is due to its computational efficiency and the nature of ease at which it can be used. Distance metrics are used to find similar data objects that lead to develop robust algorithms for the data mining functionalities such as classification and clustering. In this paper, the results obtained by implementing the k-means algorithm using three different metrics Euclidean, Manhattan and Minkowski distance metrics along with the comparative study of results of basic k-means algorithm which is implemented through Euclidian distance metric for two- dimensional data, are discussed. Results are displayed with the help of histograms.

K-means with Three different Distance Metrics

A new divisive algorithm for multidimensional data clustering is suggested. Based on the minimization of the sum-of-squared-errors, the proposed method produces much smaller quantization errors than the median-cut and mean-split algorithms. It is also observed that the solutions obtained from our algorithm are close to the local optimal ones derived by the k-means iterative procedure.
