The real time control of a nonlinear dynamic system using intelligent control techniques is considered. The focus is to investigate the current neuro fuzzy approaches from literature and adapt them to a specific application. The nonlinear dynamic system considered here is an unstable balance beam system that contains two fluid tanks, one at each end, and the balance is achieved by pumping the fluid back and forth from the tanks. The proposed controller which is a six layer network called Generalized Network based Fuzzy Inferencing Systems (GeNFIS) is developed based on the popular approach, called ANFIS (Adaptive Networks based Fuzzy Inference Systems). GeNFIS is tested on the balance beam system, both in a real time actual experiment and the simulation, and is found to be successful under supervised learning. Results of testing different versions of GeNFIS on the balance beam system are presented.

Mechatronics education developments in the United States: The perspective from Louisiana State University

Louisiana State University's (LSU) Mechaponics Engineering (MTE) initiative is an effort to improve engineering education and research at LSU. MTE brings engineers of various fields together to design and build the next generation of innovative quality products. To accomplish this task, we must better educate all engineers in systems design, group work, and effective communication of ideas. We must also train a new type of engineer who is capable of supervising and coordinating the activity of an MTE team. The LSU approach incorporates: concurrent engineering; computer aided engineering and manufacturing; product life-cycle analysis and design; automation and robotics; mechanical-electrical integrated devices; human interactions with machines; and chip level assembly and design. LSU believes that our MTE education and research initiative will provide both the engineers and the new ideas needed to design highly integrated and intelligent products. In this paper, we present the LSU initiative as an example for other universities and colleges.

Mechatronics Research And Educational Initiatives At Louisiana State University

Mechatronics is a combination of mechanics, electronics and information technology intended to raise the intelligence level and flexibility of products and devices. There is a need to develop programs and laboratories in Mechatronics to create an understanding of how new technologies influence the traditional methods of designing products and manufacturing systems. A model "Mechatronics Design Studio" has recently been developed to support the Mechatronics and Manufacturing Automation courses offered at Cal Poly's Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering Department. Laboratory experiments have been developed and several student projects have been completed. In this paper, an overview of the design studio and select student projects is provided.

Development of a Mechatronics Design Studio

Mechatronics curricula are being established at several universities associated with the Synthesis Coalition, a National Science Foundation project. aimed at improving engineering education and increasing the number, quality and diversity of engineering graduates. The programs focus on real time computation and control of mechanical systems such as DC motors, stepping motors, thermal systems, and manufacturing machinery.
