Data aggregation protocols can reduce the communication cost, thereby extending the lifetime of sensor networks. Prior works on data aggregation protocols have focused on tree-based or cluster-based structured approaches. Although structured approaches are suited for data gathering applications, they incur high maintenance overhead in dynamic scenarios for event-based applications. The goal of our work is to design techniques and protocols that lead to efficient data aggregation without explicit maintenance of a structure. As packets need to converge spatially and temporally for data aggregation, we propose two corresponding mechanisms - data-aware anycast at the MAC layer and randomized waiting at the application layer. We model the performance of the combined protocol that uses both the approaches and show that our analysis matches with the simulations. Using extensive simulations and experiments on a testbed with implementation in TinyOS, we study the performance and potential of structure-free data aggregation.

Structure-Free Data Aggregation in Sensor Networks

Large scale dense Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) will be increasingly deployed in different classes of applications for accurate monitoring. Due to the high density of nodes in these networks, it is likely that redundant data will be detected by nearby nodes when sensing an event. Since energy conservation is a key issue in WSNs, data fusion and aggregation should be exploited in order to save energy. In this case, redundant data can be aggregated at intermediate nodes reducing the size and number of exchanged messages and, thus, decreasing communication costs and energy consumption. In this work, we propose a novel Data Routing for In-Network Aggregation, called DRINA, that has some key aspects such as a reduced number of messages for setting up a routing tree, maximized number of overlapping routes, high aggregation rate, and reliable data aggregation and transmission. The proposed DRINA algorithm was extensively compared to two other known solutions: the Information Fusion-based Role Assignment (InFRA) and Shortest Path Tree (SPT) algorithms. Our results indicate clearly that the routing tree built by DRINA provides the best aggregation quality when compared to these other algorithms. The obtained results show that our proposed solution outperforms these solutions in different scenarios and in different key aspects required by WSNs.

DRINA: A Lightweight and Reliable Routing Approach for In-Network Aggregation in Wireless Sensor Networks

There is a growing interest in using wireless sensor technologies in various Internet of things scenarios. Considering the huge growth of smart objects and their applications, the need to collect and analyze their product data are becoming one of the main challenges. Sensor nodes are powered by batteries, efficient operations in term of energy are critical. Toward that end, it is desirable for a sensor node to eliminate redundancies in the received data from the neighboring nodes before transferring the final data to the central station. Data aggregation is one of the influential techniques in elimination of data redundancy and improvement of energy efficiency; also it increases the lifespan of Wireless Sensor Networks. In addition, the efficient data aggregation protocol can reduce network traffic. When a specific objective takes place in a specific area, it might be detected by more than one sensor. Considering the main challenges and aspects of data aggregation in wireless sensor networks, a review on different types of data aggregation techniques and protocols are presented in this paper. The ultimate objective of this study is to make the basic foundations to develop new advanced designs based on data integration techniques and clustering that have been proposed so far. Major techniques of data integration in wireless sensor networks covering ground, underground and underwater sensor networks are presented in this paper and the applications, advantages and disadvantages of using each technique are described.

A survey on data aggregation techniques in IoT sensor networks

Large scale dense wireless sensor networks (WSNs) will be increasingly deployed in different classes of applications for accurate monitoring. Due to this high density of nodes, it is very likely that both spatially correlated information and redundant data can be detected by several nearby nodes, which can be exploited to save energy. In this work we consider the problem of constructing a spatial correlation aware dynamic and scalable routing structure for data collection and aggregation in WSNs. Although there are some solutions for data aggregation in WSNs, most of them build their structures based on the order of event occurrence. This can lead to both low quality routing trees and a lack of load balancing support, since the same tree is used throughout the network lifetime. To tackle these challenges we propose a novel algorithm called dYnamic and scalablE tree Aware of Spatial correlaTion (YEAST). Results show that the routing tree built by YEAST provides the best aggregation quality compared with other evaluated algorithms. With YEAST an event can be sensed with 97% accuracy, and 75% of the nodes' residual energy can be saved within the phenomena area when compared with the classical approach for data collection.

A spatial correlation aware algorithm to perform efficient data collection in wireless sensor networks

The myriad of potential applications supported by wireless sensor networks (WSNs) has generated much interest from the research community. Various applications range from small size low industrial monitoring to large scale energy constrained environmental monitoring. In all cases, an operational network is required to fulfill the application missions. In addition, energy consumption of nodes is a great challenge in order to maximize network lifetime. Unlike other networks, it can be hazardous, very expensive or even impossible to charge or replace exhausted batteries due to the hostile nature of environment. Researchers are invited to design energy efficient protocols while achieving the desired network operations. This paper focuses on different techniques to reduce the consumption of the limited energy budget of sensor nodes. After having identified the reasons of energy waste in WSNs, we classify energy efficient techniques into five classes, namely data reduction, control reduction, energy efficient routing, duty cycling and topology control. We then detail each of them, presenting subdivisions and giving many examples. We conclude by a recapitulative table.
