The Therapy of Desire

The Socratic method includes three primary elements: systematic questioning, inductive reasoning, and universal definitions. Although many psychotherapists allude to the Socratic method, most refer only to the questioning style and few describe the process in adequate detail. The present report describes the use of systematic questioning in terms of its format, content, and process. Finally, an attempt is made to provide an intermediate level of structure so as to facilitate a shaping process during the interview.

Elements of the Socratic method: I. Systematic questioning.

One of the leading approaches to the nature of sensory pleasure reduces it to desire: roughly, a sensation qualifies as a sensation of pleasure just in case its subject wants to be feeling it. This approach is, in my view, correct, but it has never been formulated quite right; and it needs to defended against some compelling arguments. Thus the purpose of this paper is to discover the most defensible formulation of this rough idea, and to defend it against the most interesting objections.

The Logic of the Third Man

Plato’s Euthyphro is a clear example of a Socratic definitional dialogue. The concept to be defined is that of holiness or piety (τo ὅσιoν), and the need for a definition is presented in a manner characteristic of the early dialogues. Euthyphro is about to prosecute his father on a charge of murder, Socrates expresses surprise at Eu-thyphro’s action, and Euthyphro defends himself by saying that to prosecute his father is pious, whereas not to prosecute him would be impious. Socrates then wonders whether Euthyphro’s knowledge of piety and impiety is sufficient to guarantee that he is not acting impiously in prosecuting his father. The trap has been set; Euthyphro’s vanity is stung, and the search for a definition begins. The outcome of the search is also familiar; all of Euthyphro’s efforts miscarry. The dialogue ends with no satisfactory definition of piety either produced or in the offing.
