Composites reinforced with cellulose based fibres

Natural fiber reinforced composites is an emerging area in polymer science. These natural fibers are low cost fibers with low density and high specific properties. These are biodegradable and non-abrasive. The natural fiber composites offer specific properties comparable to those of conventional fiber composites. However, in development of these composites, the incompatibility of the fibers and poor resistance to moisture often reduce the potential of natural fibers and these draw backs become critical issue. This review presents the reported work on natural fiber reinforced composites with special reference to the type of fibers, matrix polymers, treatment of fibers and fiber-matrix interface. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Natural fiber polymer composites: A review

The rising concern towards environmental issues and, on the other hand, the need for more versatile polymer-based materials has led to increasing interest about polymer composites filled with natural-organic fillers, i.e. fillers coming from renewable sources and biodegradable. The composites, usually referred to as “green”, can find several industrial applications. On the other hand, some problems exist, such as worse processability and reduction of the ductility. The use of adhesion promoters, additives or chemical modification of the filler can help in overcoming many of these limitations. These composites can be further environment-friendly when the polymer matrix is biodegradable and comes from renewable sources as well. This short review briefly illustrates the main paths and results of research (both academic and industrial) on this topical subject, providing a quick overview (with no pretence of exhaustiveness over such a vast topic), as well as appropriate references for further in-depth studies.

Supermassive Black Holes in Galactic Nuclei: Past, Present and Future Research

A novel electrochemical method for size-controlled synthesis of spherical silver nanoparticles in aqueous phase was developed for the first time. In this method the poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) was used as the stabilizer for the silver clusters. PVP was found to greatly promote silver particle formation rate and significantly reduce silver deposition rate, thereby making monodispersed silver nanoparticles to be synthesized very convenient by means of electroreduction of the bulk silver ions. It is possible to control the particle size by adjusting electrolysis parameters and to improve homogeneity of silver particles by changing the composition of electrolytic solutions. The results also showed the fact that the rate of transfer of PVP-stabilized silver clusters from the cathodic vicinity to the bulk solution played an important role in preparation of the monodispersed nanoparticles. Electrochemical Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles under Protection of Poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone)

Mechanical properties, such as tensile and flexural properties, as well as impact behavior of silver-powder-filled isotactic polypropylene composites were investigated in the composite composition range of 0–5.6 vol% of Ag. Tensile modulus, strength, and elongation at break decreased with incorporation of silver and an increase in silver concentration. Analysis of tensile strength data indicated the introduction of stress concentration and discontinuity in the structure upon addition of Ag particles. Izod impact strength decreased sharply on addition of 0.43 vol % of Ag particles, beyond which the value decreased marginally. Both flexural modulus and strength increased with filler content due to an increase in rigidity. Surface treatment of filler marginally improved mechanical properties. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Mechanical properties of silver‐powder‐filled polypropylene composites

Tensile and impact behavior of CaCO3-filled polypropylene was studied in the composition range 0–60 wt % filler. Tensile modulus increased while tensile strength and breaking elongation decreased with increase in CaCO3 content. The modulus increase and elongation decrease were attributed to increased filler–polymer interaction resulting in reduction in molecular mobility, while increased amorphization and obstruction to stress transfer accounted for the tensile strength decrease. Analysis of tensile strength data showed introduction of stress concentration in the composites. Izod impact strength at first increased up to a critical CaCO3 content, beyond which the value decreased. Surface treatment of CaCO3 with a titanate coupling agent LICA 12 enhances the adhesion of the filler and polymer, which further modifies the strength properties. Scanning electron microscopic studies indicated better dispersion of CaCO3 particles upon surface treatment, which effected the changes in the strength properties of the composites.

Mechanical properties of i-PP/CaCO3 composites

Tensile properties of isotactic polypropylene filled with particulate kaolin fillers were evaluated in the composition range 0–60 wt % kaolin. Tensile modulus increased with filler concentration while breaking elongation and tensile strength decreased. The modulus increase was attributed to the restriction on the molecular mobility of the polymer imposed by kaolin particles. The decrease in elongation was also an effect of this restriction coupled with interference to stress transfer by the filler particles. Generation of discontinuity in the composite structure through formation of stress concentration points accounted for the tensile strength decrease. Morphology studies by SEM also indicated the introduction of stress concentration points by the presence of bare and nonadherent kaolin particles and their agglomerates with sharp edges in these composites.

Influence of wood flour on the mechanical properties of polyethylene

This article presents study of melt rheological properties of composites of polypropylene (i-PP) filled with wood flour (WF), at filler concentrations of 3–20 wt%. Results illustrate the effects of (i) filler concentration and (ii) shear stress or shear rates on melt viscosity and melt elasticity properties of the composites. Incorporation of WF into i-PP results in an increase of its melt viscosity and a decrease of melt elasticity such as die swell and first normal stress differences; these properties, however, depend on filler concentration. Processing temperature of the filled i-PP increases as compared to the nonfilled polymer.
