Author SummaryThe purpose of this paper is to discuss some recent applications of atomic absorption spectroscopy in a forensic laboratory. The first part of the paper deals with problems presented by poor sensitivity of some “heavy metals” (arsenic and mercury) and interference from matrix during determination of “heavy metals” in biological materials. The second part of the paper deals with forensic comparison of some alloys. High solute contents of the solutions used in atomic absorption spectroscopy result in scattering of light from the hollow cathode lamp and consequent error in measurements. Such high concentrations of inorganic salts can be present in solutions containing ashes of biological materials.
