Mechanical and physical properties of sintered aluminum powders

The effect of the addition of elemental Mg, Sri and Pb on the sintering of impressed prealloyed 2124 and 6061 powder has been investigated. Despite being sintered at a temperature that resulted in similar to20 vol.% liquid phase, high density was possible only upon the addition of similar to1% elemental Mg as well as trace amounts of Sri or Pb. Additions of Mg facilitated oxide disruption, while Sri and Pb segregated to the liquid phase, where they reduced the liquid's surface tension, thus improving sintering. Supersolidus liquid phase sintering of Al6061/SiC metal matrix composites

Physical and mechanical properties for prealloyed 6061 Al powder processed with and without additions of solid and/or liquid lubricants and sintering aids (Pb, Sn, Ag) are presented. For comparison, both vacuum and nitrogen sintering were carried out on as received (gas atomised) and degassed powder compacts pressed at 340 and 510 MPa. Vacuum degassing of the prealloyed powder provided better compressibility and thus higher green densities than those for the as received powder. Highest sintered densities of ∼98–99% of theoretical were obtained for the prealloyed (and degassed) Al compacts by sintering under pure nitrogen with an addition of 0·6 wt-% paraffin wax as solid lubricant or 1·33 vol.-% liquid paraffin, or with a 0·12 wt-%Pb addition as sintering aid and no lubricant. Sintering and mechanical properties of prealloyed 6061 Al powder with and without common lubricants and sintering aids

Prealloyed 6061 Al alloy powder has been degassed and die compacted under different conditions of temperature and pressure. The supersolidus liquid-phase sintering of compacts prepared from the degassed powder has been studied by dilatometry and metallography. The results identify the effects of compaction and sintering conditions on green and sintered properties such as density and dimensional change. The present study attempts to isolate critical processing parameters in terms of oxide layer break-up and optimal sintering.
