Neural bases of visual deficits during aging.

This study investigated human perceptual performance allowed by relatively impoverished information conveyed in nighttime natural scenes. Researchers used images of nighttime outdoor scenes rendered in image-intensified low-light visible (i-squared) sensors, thermal infrared (ir) sensors, and an i-squared/ir fusion technique with information added. They found that nighttime imagery provides adequate low-level image information for effective perceptual organization on a classification task, but that performance for exemplars within a given object category is dependent on the image type. Overall performance was best with the false-color fused images. This is consistent with the suggestion in the literature that color plays a predominate role in perceptual grouping and segmenting of objects in a scene and supports the suggestion that the addition of color in complex achromatic scenes aids the perceptual organization required for visual search. The study addresses the issue of assessment of perceptual performance with alternative night-vision sensors and fusion methods and begins to characterize perceptual organization abilities permitted by the information in relatively impoverished images of complex scenes. Applications of this research include improving night vision, medical, and other devices that use alternative sensors or degraded imagery.

Displacement threshold hyperacuity is a visual task which should remain unaffected by the optical changes within the aging human eye. As such, it represents a method by which the neural component of senile vision loss may be studied. Displacement thresholds were measured in eighty subjects in the 18–85-yr age range. Results demonstrate a marked reduction in sensitivity with increasing age with the rate of deterioration being proportional to the age of the subject. This can only be attributed to senile changes within the neural system.

Use of displacement threshold hyperacuity to isolate the neural component of senile vision loss

Oscillatory movement displacement thresholds: resistance to optical image degradation.

The resistance of certain types of hyperacuity tasks (eg, vernier acuity) to optical degradation of the retinal image has been demonstrated previously. This suggests that such a task might provide a means of filling the clinical need for a reliable test of retinal function in the presence of cataracts and other ocular opacities. In the present study, we measure several aspects of vernier acuity performance in cataract patients. These data provide an early basis for the development of a vernier acuity test to detect retinal/neural visual loss prior to cataract surgery. We report the results of measurements in 15 cataract patients using a two-dot vernier acuity task with variable separation between the two dots (gap). The data indicate that the shape and mean level of the vernier threshold-versus-gap function co-vary with the functional severity of the opacity as corroborated by Snellen acuity measures. Furthermore, the optical effects of the cataracts we studied are very similar to the effects of degrading the visual stimulus by interposing ground glass for a normal observer. We conclude that the shape of the vernier threshold-versus-gap function is a good indicator of the functional severity of the cataract in patients with otherwise normal vision.
