. Combined free and forced convection in a two dimensional rectangular cavity with a uniform heat source applied on the right vertical wall is studied numerically. A circular heat conducting horizontal cylinder is placed somewhere within the cavity. The present study simulates a practical system, such as a conductive material in an inert atmosphere inside a furnace with a constant flow of gas from outside. Importance is placed on the influences of the configurations and physical properties of the cavity. The development mathematical model is governed by the coupled equations of continuity, momentum and energy and is solved by employing Galerkin weighted residual finite element method. In this paper, a finite element formulation for steadystate incompressible conjugate mixed convection and conduction flow is developed. The computations are carried out for wide ranges of the governing parameters, Reynolds number (Re), Richardson number (Ri), Prandtl number (Pr) and some physical parameters. The results indicate that both the heat transfer rate from the heated wall and the dimensionless temperature in the cavity strongly depend on the governing parameters and configurations of the system studied, such as size, location, thermal conductivity of the cylinder and the location of the inflow and outflow opening. Detailed results of the interaction between forced airstreams and the buoyancy-driven flow by the heat source are demonstrated by the distributions of streamlines, isotherms and heat transfer coefficient.

Laminar free convective heat transfer from isothermal spheres: a new analytical method

A lattice Boltzmann (LB) simulation strategy is proposed for the incompressible transport phenomena occurring during macroscopic solidification of pure substances. The proposed model is derived by coupling a passive scalar-based thermal LB model with the classical enthalpy–porosity technique for solid–liquid phase-transition problems. The underlying hydrodynamics are monitored by a conventional single-particle density distribution function (DF) through a kinetic equation, whereas the thermal field is obtained from another kinetic equation which is governed by a separate temperature DF. The phase-changing aspects are incorporated into the LB model by inserting appropriate source terms in the respective kinetic equations through the most formal technique following the extended Boltzmann equations along with an appropriate enthalpy updating scheme. Natural convection in a horizontal cylinder

A fixed-grid enthalpy formulation is developed to model convection and anisotropic conduction during solidification from the side or top wall of a rectangular cavity containing pure gallium. The solid-liquid interface is tracked with the use of an interface energy-balance equation. An improved discretization method is developed to prevent nonphysical oscillations due to discontinuous temperature and velocity gradients in the vicinity of the solid-liquid interface. Numerical results are compared to experimental data from the literature on the morphology and positions of the interface. The effect of anisotropic conduction in the solid interacting with thermal convection in the liquid has been studied.

a Numerical Study of Anisotropy and Convection during Solidification

A study of directional solidification of a weak binary alloy (specifically, Bi-1% Sn) using a fixed grid single domain approach has been undertaken. The enthalpy method is used to solve for the temperature field over the computational domain, including both the solid and liquid phases. The vorticity-stream function formulation is used to describe thermosolutal convection in the liquid region. Results on the solute field and segregation are presented, showing the effects of the periodic disturbances for a range of amplitudes and frequencies (multicomponent) and for actual acceleration data obtained during a space flight.
