Incidence of inflammatory bowel disease across Europe: is there a difference between north and south? Results of the European Collaborative Study on Inflammatory Bowel Disease (EC-IBD).

TL;DR: The higher overall incidence rates in northern centres did not seem to be explained by differences in tobacco consumption or education, and the magnitude of the observed excess for both conditions is less than expected on the basis of previous studies.
Journal ArticleDOI

Clinical uniformity of inflammatory bowel disease a presentation and during the first year of disease in the north and south of Europe. EC-IBD Study Group.

TL;DR: The standard of diagnosis and clinical features of IBD are similar in specialist centres throughout Europe so providing a valid basis for this aspect of collaborative epidemiological or other studies.
Journal ArticleDOI

Inflammatory bowel disease: is there any relation between smoking status and disease presentation? European Collaborative IBD Study Group.

TL;DR: The study suggests that (a) smoking protects the colon from inflammation and (b) is associated with more active disease in Crohn's disease.
