Journal ArticleDOI

Dynamics of the activated dissociative chemisorption of CH4 and implication for the pressure gap in catalysis: A molecular beam–high resolution electron energy loss study

TL;DR: In this article, the dynamics of activated dissociative chemisorption of CH4 on Ni(111) were studied by molecular beam techniques coupled with high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy.
Journal ArticleDOI

The Chemistry of Bulk Hydrogen: Reaction of Hydrogen Embedded in Nickel with Adsorbed CH3

TL;DR: The bulk H atom is shown to be the reactive species in the hydrogenation of CH3 adsorbed on Ni(111) to form CH4, while the H atoms bound to the surface were unreactive.
Journal ArticleDOI

New Mechanisms for Chemistry at Surfaces

TL;DR: Reactions that are normally observed only at high reactant pressures, and which are the ones most often of practical importance, can now be carried out in low-pressure, ultrahigh vacuum environments.
Journal ArticleDOI

Hydrogen embedded in Ni: Production by incident atomic hydrogen and detection by high-resolution electron energy loss

TL;DR: The vibrational modes of hydrogen embedded in a Ni crystal are shown to be detectable by high-resolution electron-energy-loss spectroscopy and to be unambiguously distinguishable from the vibrational mode of adsorbed hydrogen on the basis of the dependence of the inelastic electron intensity on electron impact energy.
