Harmonic mitigation and power quality improvement in utility grid with solar energy penetration using distribution static compensator

The electrical energy demand is steadily growing, and hence, the integration of photovoltaic system to the distribution networks is also dramatically increasing though it has a significant effect on the network’s power quality. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the impact of solar PV integration on the power quality of distribution networks. The study is conducted using ETAP software, taking one of the radial distribution networks available in Bahir Dar city during the peak of connected loads which has the least voltage profile. Furthermore, the optimal location of the PV in the network is done using particle swarm optimization. Accordingly, the appropriate location of the PV system is determined to be the farthest end bus (bus 34). Also, the impact in terms of voltage and current harmonic distortion on the distribution feeder network is comparatively discussed by comparing the distribution system parameters with different penetration levels of solar PV system. The simulation results obtained demonstrate that high harmonic distortion level is injected correspondingly as the penetration capacity of PV system increased which indicates that the solar PV system should be integrating only up to a maximum possible capacity the network can carry. The integration of the PV system beyond this maximum penetration level causes production of high harmonic distortion which adversely affects the system performance. At the maximum penetration level which allows the acceptable harmonic distortion limit, the total voltage harmonic distortion and current demand distortion are found to be 4.97% and 14.98%, respectively.

Power Quality and Performance Analysis of Grid-Connected Solar PV System Based on Recent Grid Integration Requirements

Objective of research is to analyze the influence of solar irradiance and integration of  photovoltaic (PV) generator to power quality of three phase grid on the constant temperature and load, based on changes in some level of integration of  PV generator. Power quality aspects studied are fluctuation or changing, and harmonics of voltage and current on eight scenarios PV generator connected to three-phase grid, using passive filter circuit model double band pass (double tuned). Research shows that voltage and current values on the PCC bus before use double tuned passive filter on the condition only connect single generator is still stable. However, if the PV generator connected to the three phase grid, amounted to more than one generation, voltage and current grid becomes unstable (fluctuation). At the level of solar radiation remains, the greater number of PV generators connected to the grid three-phase, then the values of voltage and current THD increases. At the level of solar irradiance increases, average THD of voltage and current grid also increased. Avarage THD of voltage and current grid is reduced after double tuned passive filter installed. Therefore, double tuned passive filter able to improve profile of voltage and current THD grid as a result of the integration of a number of PV power generators in three-phase grid according IEEE Standard 519-1992. Simulation and analysis of this research use Matlab/Simulink.

A Comparison Study on Types of PV for Grid Connected Photovoltaic Power

Increased concern about global warming coupled with the escalating demand of energy has driven the conventional power system to be more reliable one by integrating Renewable Energies (RE) in to grid. Over the recent years, integration of solar PV forming a grid-connected PV is considered as one of the most promising technologies to the developed countries like Australia to meet the growing demand of energy. This rapid increase in grid connected photovoltaic (PV) systems has made the supply utilities concerned about the drastic effects that have to be considered on the distribution network in particular voltage fluctuations, harmonic distortions and the Power factor for sustainable power generation. However, irrespective of the fact that the utility grid can accommodate the variability of load or irregular solar irradiance, it is essential to study the impact of grid connected PV systems during higher penetration levels as the intermittent nature of solar PV adversely effects the grid characteristics in meeting the load demand. Hence, keeping this in track, this paper examines the grid-connected PV system considering a residential network of Geelong region (38°.09'S and 144°.21' E) and explores the level of impacts considering summer load profile with a change in the level of integrations. Initially, a PV power system network model is developed in MATLAB/Simulink environment and the simulations are carried out to explore the impacts of solar PV penetration at low voltage distribution network considering power quality (PQ) issues such as voltage fluctuations, harmonics distortion at different load conditions.
