Segmentation of the breast region and pectoral muscle are fundamental subsequent steps in the process of Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD) systems. Segmenting the breast region and pectoral muscle are considered a difficult task, particularly in mammogram images because of artefacts, homogeneity among the region of the breast and pectoral muscle, and low contrast along the region of breast boundary, the similarity between the texture of the Region of Interest (ROI), and the unwanted region and irregular ROI. This study aims to propose an improved threshold-based and trainable segmentation model to derive ROI. A hybrid segmentation approach for the boundary of the breast region and pectoral muscle in mammogram images was established based on thresholding and Machine Learning (ML) techniques. For breast boundary estimation, the region of the breast was highlighted by eliminating bands of the wavelet transform. The initial breast boundary was determined through a new thresholding technique. Morphological operations and masking were employed to correct the overestimated boundary by deleting small objects. In the medical imaging field, significant progress to develop effective and accurate ML methods for the segmentation process. In the literature, the imperative role of ML methods in enabling effective and more accurate segmentation method has been highlighted. In this study, an ML technique was built based on the Histogram of Oriented Gradient (HOG) feature with neural network classifiers to determine the region of pectoral muscle and ROI. The proposed segmentation approach was tested by utilizing 322, 200, 100 mammogram images from mammographic image analysis society (mini-MIAS), INbreast, Breast Cancer Digital Repository (BCDR) databases, respectively. The experimental results were compared with manual segmentation based on different texture features. Moreover, evaluation and comparison for the boundary of the breast region and pectoral muscle segmentation have been done separately. The experimental results showed that the boundary of the breast region and the pectoral muscle segmentation approach obtained an accuracy of 98.13% and 98.41% (mini-MIAS), 100%, and 98.01% (INbreast), and 99.8% and 99.5% (BCDR), respectively. On average, the proposed study achieved 99.31% accuracy for the boundary of breast region segmentation and 98.64% accuracy for pectoral muscle segmentation. The overall ROI performance of the proposed method showed improving accuracy after improving the threshold technique for background segmentation and building an ML technique for pectoral muscle segmentation. More so, this article also included the ground-truth as an evaluation of comprehensive similarity. In the clinic, this analysis may be provided as a valuable support for breast cancer identification.

Improved Threshold Based and Trainable Fully Automated Segmentation for Breast Cancer Boundary and Pectoral Muscle in Mammogram Images

Mammography is currently the most powerful technique for early detection of breast cancer. To assist radiologists to better interpret mammogram images, computer-aided detection and diagnosis (CAD) systems have been proposed. This paper proposes a complete CAD system for mass detection and diagnosis, which consists of four steps. The first step consists of the preprocessing where the image is enhanced and the noise removed. In the second step, the abnormalities are segmented using the proposed HRAK algorithm. In the third step, the false positives are reduced using texture and shape features and the bagged trees classifier. Finally, the support vector machine (SVM) is used to classify the abnormalities as malignant or benign. The proposed CAD system is verified with both the MIAS and CBIS-DDSM databases. The experimental results proved to be successful. The accuracy detection rate achieves 93,15% for sensitivity and 0,467 FPPI for MIAS and 90,85% for sensitivity and 0,65 FPPI for CBIS-DDSM. The accuracy classification rate achieves 94,2% and the AUC 0,95 for MIAS and 90,44% and 0,9 for CBIS-DDSM.

Deconv-transformer (DecT): A histopathological image classification model for breast cancer based on color deconvolution and transformer architecture

Breast cancer has affected many women worldwide. To perform detection and classification of breast cancer many computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems have been established because the inspection of the mammogram images by the radiologist is a difficult and time taken task. To early diagnose the disease and provide better treatment lot of CAD systems were established. There is still a need to improve existing CAD systems by incorporating new methods and technologies in order to provide more precise results. This paper aims to investigate ways to prevent the disease as well as to provide new methods of classification in order to reduce the risk of breast cancer in women’s lives. The best feature optimization is performed to classify the results accurately. The CAD system’s accuracy improved by reducing the false-positive rates.The Modified Entropy Whale Optimization Algorithm (MEWOA) is proposed based on fusion for deep feature extraction and perform the classification. In the proposed method, the fine-tuned MobilenetV2 and Nasnet Mobile are applied for simulation. The features are extracted, and optimization is performed. The optimized features are fused and optimized by using MEWOA. Finally, by using the optimized deep features, the machine learning classifiers are applied to classify the breast cancer images. To extract the features and perform the classification, three publicly available datasets are used: INbreast, MIAS, and CBIS-DDSM. The maximum accuracy achieved in INbreast dataset is 99.7%, MIAS dataset has 99.8% and CBIS-DDSM has 93.8%. Finally, a comparison with other existing methods is performed, demonstrating that the proposed algorithm outperforms the other approaches.

Breast Cancer Mammograms Classification Using Deep Neural Network and Entropy-Controlled Whale Optimization Algorithm

Considering breast density for the classification of benign and malignant mammograms

Mammography is currently the most powerful technique for early detection of breast cancer. To better interpret mammogram images and assist radiologists in their decision, CAD systems have been proposed. This paper gives a comparative analysis of the existing preprocessing methods and proposes a technique for preprocessing mammography that will be implemented afterwards in a CAD system. The proposed preprocessing technique consists of four phases: The first involves suppressing noise from mammogram images using two denoising filters. The second comprises the contrast enhancement using the CLAHE. The third phase describes labels removal, and finally, pectoral muscle segmentation method is performed. The proposed method is applied on images from MIAS and INbreast databases resulting in complete pectoral muscle suppression in most of the images.

A New Mammogram Preprocessing Method for Computer-Aided Diagnosis Systems

Mammography is currently the most powerful technique for early detection of breast cancer. To better interpret mammogram images and assist radiologists in their decision, Computer-Aided-Detection (CAD) systems have been proposed. In this paper, we present a novel algorithm for abnormalities segmentation in mammograms. The proposed method combines global thresholding and K-means algorithms to extract suspicious lesions in mammogram images. The algorithm has been tested on 170 mammograms in the Mammographic Image Analysis Society MIAS database. The experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms other state-of-the-art methods for lesions detection in mammography.

Automatic detection of suspicious lesions in mammograms by histogram-peak-analysis based K-means

To find a parking space, valet parking drivers have to travel a lot, which leads to carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. In order to reduce these emissions, it is essential to understand a user’s needs and criteria when searching for a parking space. Several selection criteria are considered when allocating a parking space. Recent research on parking space management mentions several parameters that have an impact on the choice of a parking space: namely, the traffic situation, the availability of each parking lot in question, and the cost of parking, etc. In this article, we discuss a new criterion: the physical condition of the driver in the management of parking spaces; the identification of the driver’s bodily fragility. We also propose MCDM as a parking space allocation model that best meets the cost–benefit convention. This reflection leads us to evaluate MCDM methods in the field of intelligent parking management. Therefore, we conducted a comparison between the most recent multi-criteria decision making methods used by researchers, namely, CODA, EDAS, TOPSIS, and WASPAS. The CRITIC method was used in this paper to objectively determine the weight of each criterion. A new approach is proposed to evaluate and select the best MCDM method. Indeed, we propose a method that computes the “average inter-item correlation SW”, a combination of the “average inter-item correlation” and the SW coefficient. This approach allows us to efficiently compute the correlation between a method and the set of methods while favoring the cells with the best ranking. A case study is presented to illustrate the MCDM approach to parking space allocation and evaluation. The proposed system provides drivers with services such as intelligent parking decisions, taking into account the human aspect while reducing energy consumption, driving time, and traffic congestion caused by searching for available parking spaces.
