A system and a method for activation of portable and mobile media player devices for wireless LAN services have been disclosed. In one embodiment, the system includes a server computer, a wireless transmitter to transmit a signal, and a portable device comprising a wireless receiver to receive the signal and a wireless transceiver to transition from a first state to a second state to perform content synchronization with the server computer in response to the signal, wherein the wireless transceiver consumes less power in the first state than in the second state. Other embodiments have been claimed and described.

A secure entry system (10, 44, 50, 60) makes use of radio transmissions to communicate with locks (12, 12'), keys (46), and related components throughout the system. The radio transmissions can be made using a paging system, a cellular telephone system (52, 54), or any other RF carrier (26). Some embodiments (50) employ a cellular telephone (52) in lieu of an electronic key (46). Others integrate a paging receiver (14) within an electronic key to provide a unit with dual functionality. The system is illustrated with reference to exemplary applications in the industrial site security, real estate lockbox, and transportation fields (60).

A non-contact IC card include a data transmitting/receiving device, a memory, a CPU, a first determining device, a second determining device, and a stopping device. When the data transmitting/receiving device receives a request signal, the first determining device determines whether first system identification information stored in the memory agrees with second system identification information contained in the request signal. At the same time, the second determining device determines whether use of the IC card indicated by use authorization information stored in the memory is authorized. When the first and second system identification information do not agree or when the use authorization information indicates that use of the IC card is not authorized, the stopping device stops the operation of the CPU until the next request signal is received.

Control system for controlling at least one part of a vehicle includes a plurality of sensor systems mounted at different locations on the vehicle, each sensor system providing a measurement related to a state thereof system or a measurement related to a state of the mounting location. A processor is coupled to the sensor systems and diagnoses the state of the vehicle itself and optionally its dynamic motion based on the measurements of the sensor systems. The processor controls each part based at least in part on the diagnosed state of the vehicle.

Vehicle component control methods and systems

A stability control system 24 for an automotive vehicle as includes a plurality of sensors 28-37 sensing the dynamic conditions of the vehicle and a controller 26 that controls a distributed brake pressure to reduce a tire moment so the net moment of the vehicle is counter to the roll direction. The sensors include a speed sensor 30 , a lateral acceleration sensor 32 , a roll rate sensor 34, and a yaw rate sensor 20. The controller 26 is coupled to the speed sensor 30, the lateral acceleration sensor 32, the roll rate sensor 34, the yaw rate sensor 28. The controller 26 determines a roll angle estimate in response to lateral acceleration, roll rate, vehicle speed, and yaw rate. The controller 26 changes a tire force vector using brake pressure distribution in response to the relative roll angle estimate.

Roll over stability control for an automotive vehicle

A rollover sensing apparatus and method are provided for predicting rollover and/or pitchover conditions of a vehicle. An angular rate sensor senses attitude rate of the vehicle, a first accelerometer measures horizontal acceleration of the vehicle, and a second accelerometer measures vertical acceleration of the vehicle. A current attitude angle is estimated with Kalman filtering and a future attitude angle is predicted at an advance time. The predicted attitude angle is compared to a threshold and an output is produced for indicating a predicted vehicle rollover condition based on the comparison. A vehicle rollover condition about the longitudinal axis of the vehicle is predicted by comparing a future roll angle to a rollover angle threshold, while a pitchover condition about the lateral axis of a vehicle is predicted by comparing a future pitch angle to a pitch angle threshold.

Vehicle rollover sensing

A vehicle (10) has a base unit (12) for bi-directional VHF communication with an electronic key (14) and with a non-vehicular station (22). To conserve battery energy, the electronic key (14) is normally maintained in a sleep state except for a low power wakeup circuit. For security purposes, a short range LF radio link carries a wakeup signal to initiate communications with the key (14). After wakeup, communications are continued over the VHF link using a modulated LF subcarrier riding on a VHF carrier.

Apparatus for communicating with a vehicle

A system for unlocking any of several vehicles by a passive electronic key coupled to base units in the vehicles by a radio link uses short range LF transmission for signals to the key and VHF transmission for signals to the base units. The key has a ferrite antenna connected to a receiver comprising a comparator. When an operator pulls the door handle, codes stored in the base are transmitted to identify any authorized key within the range. The key has a memory partitioned into separate blocks for different base units and another block for a scratchpad memory. A state machine stores the block addresses and controls access to the blocks according to the transmitted codes. When a block is accessed, a secure ID in the block is sent to the base unit to verify that the key is authorized to unlock the vehicle. The ID can be updated upon command from the base unit using the same codes to assure that an authorized unit is receiving the new ID. The new ID is written to the scratchpad, verified for correctness, and the scratchpad address is exchanged for the address of the block containing the old ID. Auxiliary data specific to the vehicle or to the user of the electronic key may also be stored in the memory blocks and retrieved along with the ID.

Changing one of many access codes upon removal of ignition key

A system for unlocking any of several vehicles (10) by a passive electronic key (14) coupled to base units (12) in the vehicles (10) by a radio link uses short range LF transmission for signals to the key (14) and VHF transmission for signals to the base units (12). The ID can be updated upon command from the base unit (12) using the same codes to assure that an authorized unit is receiving the new ID. The new ID is written to the scratchpad, verified for correctness, and the scratchpad address is exchanged for the address of the block containing the old ID. Auxiliary data specific to the vehicle (10) or to the user of the electronic key (14) may also be stored in the memory blocks (50) and retrieved along with the ID.

System for accesssing a plurality of stations

PURPOSE: To enable access to a plurality of codes by storing only one base number and an identification number for each base unit and providing a memory block allotted to one of each base code. CONSTITUTION: When a door handle of a vehicle is pulled, a controller 24 of a base unit transmits bit signals including a wake-up code, a base number, and a function code. Then, a remote unit 24x compares the wake-up code with the contents of a wake-up register 42 and if they coincide with each other, energizes a state machine 44. Next, the controller 24 transmits a request ID signal, the state machine responds thereto and transmit an ID. The controller 24 compares the received ID with one stored in a code X, and when they coincide with each other, the door is opened. If they do not coincide, the controller 24 repeats the procedure using codes Y, Z.
