The current study re-investigates the impact of renewable and non-renewable energy consumption on Turkey’s ecological footprint. This study applies Quantile Autoregressive Lagged (QARDL) approach for the period of 1965Q1-2017Q4. We further apply Granger-causality in Quantiles to check the causal relationship among the variables. The results of QARDL show that error correction parameter is statistically significant with the expected negative sign for all quantiles which confirm an existence of significant reversion to the long-term equilibrium connection between the related variables and ecological footprint in Turkey. In particular, the outcomes suggested that renewable energy decrease ecological footprint in long-run on each quantile. However, the results of economic growth and non-renewable energy impact positively to ecological footprint in long-short run period at all quantiles. Finally, we tested the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis and the results of QARDL confirmed the EKC in Turkey. Furthermore, the findings of causal investigation from Granger-causality in quantiles evident the presence of a bi-directional causal relationship between renewable energy consumption, energy consumption and economic growth with ecological footprint in the Turkish economy.

Revisiting the role of renewable and non-renewable energy consumption on Turkey’s ecological footprint: Evidence from Quantile ARDL approach

Using annual data for the period 1970-2012, the study explores the relationship between globalization and CO2 emissions by incorporating energy consumption, financial development and economic growth in CO2 emission function for India. It applies Lee and Strazicich (2013) unit root test for examining the stationary properties of variables in presence of structural breaks and employs the cointegration method proposed by Bayer-Hanck (2013) to test the long-run relationships in the model. The robustness s of cointegration result from the latter model was further verified with the application of the ARDL bounds testing approach to cointegration proposed by Pesaran, Shin and Smith (2001). After confirming the existence of cointegration, the overall long run estimates of the estimation of carbon emission model points out that acceleration in the process of globalization (measured in its three dimensions - economic, social and political globalizations) and energy consumption result in increasing CO2 emissions, along with the contribution of economic development and financial development towards the deterioration of the environmental quality by raising CO2 emissions over the long-run. This finding validates holding of environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) hypothesis for the Indian context.

Does Globalization Impede Environmental Quality in India

This study investigates the impact of globalization, financial development, and energy utilization on environmental sustainability in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. GCC countries are currently experiencing higher demand and utilization of energy resources, high global integration, and improvements in the financial sector that poses serious environmental sustainability challenges. We have employed a relatively comprehensive proxy, i.e., ecological footprint for environmental sustainability and more advanced and robust econometric strategies (second-generation) to examine the impact of globalization, financial development, and energy utilization on environmental sustainability in the GCC countries, which have a significant departure from the extant literature. The results of this study show that globalization, financial development, and energy utilization are significantly deteriorating the environmental quality in the GCC countries. Additionally, in order to account for the national heterogeneity, we have performed country-specific analysis and interestingly, results reveal that globalization, financial development, and energy utilization negatively influence the environmental sustainability in each sample country that is consistent with the findings of overall panel. Furthermore, the findings are robust to various robustness checks that we have performed for checking the reliability of our main findings. This study also offers some useful policy implications to the stakeholder in general and specifically concerning the GCC countries for promoting their environmental sustainability.

Do renewable energy consumption and financial globalisation contribute to ecological sustainability in newly industrialized countries?

This paper aims at estimating the dynamic impact of renewable and non-renewable energy consumption, globalization, urbanization, and economic growth on the environmental quality. Unlike previous study, this study used multi-dimensional indicator of environmental quality that is ecological footprint. Given the importance of renewable energy, a sample of top renewable energy consuming countries has been selected for analysis spanning the period 1991-2016. The analysis is carried out in panel data framework that considers the issues of cross sectional dependence and heterogeneity. The results of cointegration test show the existence of long-run equilibrium relationship among the variables. The long-run elasticity of pooled mean group shows positive impact of economic growth and non-renewable energy consumption on ecological footprint while negative impact is observed in case of renewable energy consumption, globalization and urbanization. The sensitivity of long-run elasticity has been checked with the help of fully modified ordinary least square and dynamic ordinary least square. Based on empirical findings, some policy implication has also been provided.
